Error In Route Nearly Ends In Tragedy: Brazilian Faces Extreme Cold And 5-Hour Walk Until Rescued By Police In Argentinian Patagonia
A GPS routing error nearly ended in tragedy in Argentinian Patagonia. Brazilian programmer Thiago Araújo Crevelloni, 38, got stuck in a snow dune on May 17. He was traveling alone toward El Calafate when he was surprised by an alternative route suggested by the navigator. Without internet signal, he had to walk for hours in extreme cold until he was rescued by the police.
Thiago’s trip was a long-held dream: to drive across Patagonia. He had already passed through Mendoza, El Bolsón, and Perito Moreno. On the day of the incident, the snow was light and the road seemed safe.
The famous Route 40, known for its scenery and isolation, was still passable. There were trucks circulating and machines clearing the road.

Everything changed when the GPS indicated a detour. Thiago followed the guidance and drove for another 20 km. The snow became heavier and the wind obstructed his vision.
It was then that the car got stuck in a white dune, indistinguishable from the road. Unable to get out, he tried to free the car using rocks and tools, but was unsuccessful.
With no one around and no cellphone signal, he decided to walk to the main road. Soaked and very cold, he left around 5 PM, carrying a backpack.
He walked for more than five hours in the dark, facing -10º C. At one point, he fell into the snow. He lay there for a few minutes and then managed to get up.
His salvation came when he spotted a light on the horizon. Initially, he thought he was hallucinating. But the light was getting closer. It was a patrol car from the Argentine police. He waved his arms, turned on his cellphone flashlight, and was seen.
The police offered water, food, and warm clothing. They took Thiago to the hospital and then to a hotel. The next day, with the help of a tow truck, he was able to recover his car.
The rescue was only possible because the host of the inn where he was staying noticed his disappearance and reported it to the police. This initiated the search.
Despite the scare, Thiago recovered well and decided to continue his journey. After all, crossing Patagonia was his big dream.
