The Prices of Gasoline and Diesel in Brazil Exceed Foreign Values by 4%, Raising Concerns About the Impact on the Market.
The value of gasoline and diesel in Brazil remains higher than the prices practiced abroad. According to a report released by the Brazilian Association of Fuel Importers (Abicom) last Thursday (09/26), the liter of gasoline is, on average, R$ 0.11 more expensive in the Brazilian market, representing a difference of 4% compared to what is found in other countries. This disparity raises questions about the factors influencing domestic fuel prices.
Impact of the International Market
Abicom highlighted that the average prices of gasoline A are above or at parity in all analyzed hubs.
The entity also noted that the international market and currency fluctuations are putting pressure on prices in Brazil.

The Import Parity Price (IPP) has accumulated a reduction of R$ 0.51 per liter since the last adjustment made by Petrobras.
This indicates that even with the drop in the IPP, gasoline in Brazil remains more expensive than abroad.
The situation is no different for diesel. According to Abicom, the price of diesel is, on average, 4% more expensive in Brazil than in the Gulf of Mexico, a region frequently used as a reference for fuel trading by importers.
This difference amounts to a deficit of R$ 0.13 per liter. Just like gasoline, diesel A also operates above parity in all analyzed hubs.
In Petrobras’ five hubs, gasoline was, on average, R$ 0.10 more per liter compared to the international price.
Diesel A, in turn, showed an increase of R$ 0.14 per liter, also 4% above the price practiced abroad.
Factors Influencing Gasoline and Diesel Prices
The prices of gasoline and diesel in Brazil are influenced by various factors, including domestic demand, the price of oil in the international market, and the pricing policies adopted by distributors.
The exchange rate also plays a crucial role, as most oil is imported.
With the economic instability, fluctuations in the exchange rate can directly impact fuel costs, resulting in higher prices for consumers.
This complex relationship between the domestic market and abroad is essential to understanding the value differences of fuels.
Consequences for Consumers
The disparity in the prices of gasoline and diesel can have significant repercussions for Brazilian consumers.
With higher fuel prices, transportation and production costs also increase, which can lead to a ripple effect in other sectors of the economy.
This is especially concerning for families and businesses that are already facing financial challenges.
Abicom warns that the continuation of this trend could result in additional difficulties for consumers, making a broader discussion on the fuel pricing policy in Brazil and its relation to foreign prices essential.
The Price Scenario of Gasoline and Other Fuels in Brazil
Regarding the Aratu hub in Bahia, operated by Acelen, diesel was sold at a price 1% higher than that of the Gulf of Mexico.
Similarly, gasoline was 4% above the international level. The calculation of the IPP was based on the market closing values on the last Wednesday, the 25th.
Abicom concluded its report stating that, with exchange rate stability and a slight reduction in reference prices for gasoline and diesel in the international market, the average price scenario in Brazil remains above parity.
Therefore, gasoline and diesel continue to be more expensive in Brazil than the values found abroad.
