Braskem Stands Out in Innovation by Winning 2nd Place in the Chemical Industry in the Top 100 Open Startups, Driving Digital Transformation and Collaboration.

Braskem reaffirms its position as one of the leaders in the sector by securing second place in the ‘Chemical Industry and Packaging’ category of the prestigious Top 100 Open Startups ranking. This recognition highlights the company as a driving force in innovation, propelling the adoption of cutting-edge technologies and advanced practices that redefine chemical industry standards. The company continues to be an example in using innovative strategies to promote a more sustainable and efficient.

The commitment to open innovation enables Braskem to effectively collaborate with various startups, bringing new ideas and solutions to the market. This approach, also known as open innovation, not only accelerates the company’s digital transformation but also strengthens its sustainability initiatives. Integration with startups is essential to stimulate creativity and diversity of solutions, allowing Braskem to remain at the forefront of technological development within the chemical industry.

Pioneering Innovation at Braskem

Here are some of the themes that have been central to Braskem’s strategy, the largest producer of thermoplastic resins in the Americas, culminating in well-deserved recognition. The company achieved 2nd place in the ‘Chemical Industry and Packaging’ category in the prestigious Top 100 Open Startups 2024 ranking. This is the third consecutive year that Braskem has stood out as one of the leaders in open innovation on the platform that recognizes both promising startups and leading companies in implementing these practices.

Innovation is the driving force that propels the growth of any organization. It opens doors to new markets, continuously enhancing the products and services already in the portfolio. In Braskem’s case, the strategic relationship with the startup ecosystem has been a key element. This contact facilitates innovation by enabling the agile adoption of disruptive solutions, capturing tangible results for the challenges faced and developing technological solutions for crucial research and development (R&D) issues, while also expanding a portfolio of potential future businesses.

Strengthening Open Innovation

In addition to celebrating companies that excel in integrating open innovation with startups, the ranking aims to stimulate and measure the progress of this practice in Latin America. The Top 100 Open Startups employs objective criteria, focused on the quantity and intensity of the bond between corporations and startups, serving as a primary source of data on this topic. Braskem’s prominent position reflects the intense collaborative work involved in contracting innovative services and technologies through startups in R&D, Venture Client, Venture Building, Acceleration, and Corporate Venture Capital. According to Guilherme Baeta, Chief Digital Officer at Braskem, this collaboration is vital for the company to maintain its leadership position in the chemical sector.

‘We have not only managed to accelerate the implementation of innovative solutions but also foster an ecosystem that benefits the entire production chain. This recognition is proof of our ongoing commitment to innovation and digital transformation,’ he emphasizes.

Digital Transformation and Production Chain

In recent years, Braskem has excelled through its substantial investments in digital transformation, achieving significant results. One of the pillars of success has been strengthening the company’s digital portfolio, which, by the end of 2023, included 59 digital products. These tools have a significant impact on more than 200 areas, covering a wide range of processes and operations, from the supply chain to customer service. In addition, it has an impressive global infrastructure to accelerate its development in innovation.

There are two centers of technology and innovation in Triunfo (Brazil) and Pittsburgh (USA); two technical hubs focused on polymers in Germany and Mexico; a process technology development hub in Mauá (Brazil); seven pilot plants; and two research hubs in renewable chemicals in Campinas (Brazil) and in the United States, at the newly established center in Lexington. The results of this infrastructure are remarkable. In 2023, more than 450 clients were supported by research teams, and 210 innovation and technology projects were developed. Several open innovation initiatives are also underway.

Circular Economy and Sustainability

Voqen, for example, was born with Braskem’s support and focuses on the energy transition of the petrochemical sector. Its management covers natural gas and electricity contracts, representing R$ 4.5 billion and 74,500 tons of CO2e avoided through the sale of renewable energy certificates. Another example of collaboration in innovation is Sustainea, created in partnership with Japan’s Sojitz. This joint venture manages the production and marketing of monoethylene glycol (bioMEG), which has uses in construction, industrial applications, and cosmetics. A significant innovation from Braskem was the development of a bioPET bottle, approved for food contact.

Braskem: Commitment to Innovation

Focused on people and sustainability, Braskem is dedicated to contributing to the value chain by promoting the Circular Economy. With an innovative DNA, it offers an extensive portfolio of plastic resins and chemical products for various sectors, such as food packaging, construction, industrial, automotive, agribusiness, health, and hygiene. With 40 industrial units distributed among Brazil, the USA, Mexico, and Germany, the company exports its products to more than 71 countries around the world.
