Aiming to Achieve Its Goal of Becoming Fully Sustainable by 2040, BRF Closed a Contract with Pontoon for the Construction of a Solar Power Plant in Ceará

On Thursday (16), food company BRF announced the closing of a contract with Pontoon for the construction of a solar power plant in the municipalities of Mauriti and Milagres, in Ceará, with an installed capacity of 320 MW. According to the company, the estimated investment in the project is over R$ 1 billion, and BRF will also invest approximately R$ 50 million directly. The solar power plant is expected to commence operations in 2024.

BRF President Comments on New Investment in Renewable Energy in Ceará

The solar power plant in Ceará will be built on an area of 1,170 hectares, where 600,000 photovoltaic panels will be installed, ensuring that the generated energy will be used to supply all BRF units in the southern part of the country. The partnership with Intrepid also joins BRF’s joint venture that was announced last month with AES Brazil for wind energy production at the Cajuína Complex, in Rio Grande do Norte.

In addition to these, there are other ongoing projects involving integrated producers. In a video conference with journalists, Lorival Luz, BRF’s president, stated that the contract with Pontoon is expected to result in an estimated gain of R$ 1.7 billion over the next 15 years, considering that it will reduce energy purchases in captive and free markets.

Vinícius Barbosa, vice president of operations and supply chain, emphasized that together, these solar energy operations in Ceará with Pontoon and the wind power park with AES can ensure energy generation sufficient to meet up to two-thirds of the company’s needs in Brazil. According to the company, the current portfolio and partnerships with other companies will ensure that 88% of the electricity used by BRF comes from renewable sources in the country.

In June, the company announced its commitment to achieve net greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, both in its manufacturing operations and in its production chains.

BRF Closes Partnership with AES Brazil

In addition to the partnership with Pontoon for the solar project in Ceará, BRF also partnered in August with AES Brazil, resulting in the creation of a joint venture. The partnership aims to construct a wind power plant at the Cajuína Wind Complex in the state of RN.

The project will have a production capacity of 160 MW, where 80 MW will be sold to BRF through a power purchase agreement lasting 15 years.
