Car Manufacturer Announces Unprecedented Agreement in Camaçari with Scaled Adjustments That Directly Impact Half of the Workforce, Bringing Retroactive Pay and Opening a New Phase of Negotiations Over Internal Salaries.

BYD Auto do Brasil signed on September 18, 2025 its first wage agreement with the Metalworkers Union of Camaçari, approved in a workers’ assembly.

The agreement applies exclusively to logistics operators and production operators at the facility being established in the Bahian municipality and adjusts the base salary from R$ 1,950.00 to R$ 2,067.00 starting in September, with payment retroactive to July and August.

The agreement is valid for 12 months.

Agreement Approved in Assembly

According to the company, the proposal was built to ensure immediate gains for entry-level positions on the production line and in the flow of parts.

“We proposed this first wage agreement, with direct gains for workers, and the union accepted our proposal, which was brought to approval in assembly,” stated Rodrigo Rosseto, senior human resources manager at BYD.

Scaled Adjustments Defined

The approved text establishes two additional raises over time scales.

After three months of work, the base salary for logistics and production operators will increase to R$ 2,273.00.

Another three months later, the base salary will rise to R$ 2,500.00, which represents 28.2% more compared to the original amount of R$ 1,950.00.

The scaled structure creates a defined compensation trajectory for those starting in these positions and remaining in place during the expected periods.

Impact on the Camaçari Complex

BYD reports that the industrial complex in Camaçari currently has approximately 1,500 workers active, a number that includes construction, assembly, and support areas.

The logistics and production operators, the group directly covered by the agreement, represent approximately 50% of this workforce.

Other Positions Will Follow the Dispute

For other positions in the factory, BYD states that the adjustments will follow the collective bargaining agreement of the category.

The company did not specify deadlines or applicable indices for areas such as quality, maintenance, and leadership, which have their own salary structures and are generally adjusted in specific negotiations or sector agreements.

Union Values Mobilization

The union leadership associated the result with mobilization on the shop floor.

“This significant increase is the result of organization and the struggle with the union. Only with unity do we achieve results of this magnitude,” declared Julio Bonfim, representative of the Metalworkers Union of Camaçari.

For the leader, the outcome creates a reference for the continuation of negotiations throughout the annual agreement cycle.

Salary Equalization Under Discussion

The union informed that the next demand will address internal equalization.

The entity mentions areas such as quality, maintenance, forklift operation, leadership, bodywork, stamping, adjustments, and welding, where it sees discrepancies in relation to compensation.

In Bonfim’s assessment, the increase in the base salary for production and logistics necessitates a review of the salaries for these other groups to “ensure justice and balance.”

BYD has not commented, so far, on parameters or timelines for possible internal adjustments beyond what has already been announced.

Retroactive Pay and Payroll

The first practical effect for those in the covered positions is the credit of the retroactive amount for July and August, in addition to the new base salary in September.

Subsequently, the increase to R$ 2,273.00 and, later, to R$ 2,500.00 will occur according to the time milestones defined in the agreement.

The limited scope to operators and the duration of 12 months indicate that the review of other careers will follow a different process linked to the dispute and specific negotiations.

Industrial Project in Expansion

The labor agreement arrives while BYD accelerates the establishment of its industrial complex in Camaçari, which is still in the implementation phase.

The hiring effort for logistics and production explains the emphasis on these positions and the design of a progressive base salary, common in operational ramp phases.

In addition to standardizing entry-level compensation, the agreement aims to reduce turnover in critical functions for supply, assembly, and process stabilization.

Expectations for New Negotiations

The dialogue between BYD and the union remains open to discuss adjacent points, such as career structures, possible function bonuses, and compensations associated with shifts and targets.

Although the negotiation title highlights the impact of the adjustment in the sector, the industrial dynamics itself indicates that other manufacturers and system providers may adopt their own agendas throughout the year, according to their collective agreements and regional conditions.

Next Steps in Dialogue

While the covered workers wait for the retroactive payments and planned increases, the union signals that it will intensify discussions about internal equalizations.

The company, in turn, notes that it will follow the dispute for other positions.

The current stage solidifies a higher base salary for the productive workforce and, at the same time, opens a discussion front on pay coherence between technical and support areas.

In your assessment, what criteria should guide salary equalization within an expanding manufacturing plant?
