With New FPSO and Billion-Dollar Investments, Company Accelerates Goals in Pre-Salt. Discoveries and Expansion Reinforce Petrobras’ Protagonism in the Global Scenario.
Petrobras’ oil production has just reached a historic milestone. On March 24, 2025, the Búzios Field in the pre-salt of the Santos Basin registered 800 thousand barrels per day, becoming the second largest production hub in Brazil, trailing only the Tupi Field.
This advancement was driven by the start of operations of the FPSO Almirante Tamandaré, also known as Búzios 7, on February 15. The platform has the capacity to produce up to 225 thousand barrels of oil per day and process 12 million m³ of natural gas, consolidating the company’s strategy to expand production in the pre-salt with cutting-edge technology.
Goal: Búzios Field May Become the Largest in Brazil by 2025

Petrobras has already confirmed that it intends to launch, in the next 60 days, the bidding for the FPSO Búzios 12, with a capacity of 180 thousand barrels/day. The new unit is expected to operate as a natural gas offloading hub for other platforms in the field, further accelerating the oil production growth of Petrobras in the pre-salt.

According to the company’s official projections, the expectation is that the Búzios Field will exceed 1 million barrels per day in the second half of 2025. If the goal is achieved, Búzios will lead national production, consolidating itself as the largest asset of the state-owned company.
Petrobras Also Invests Heavily in the Campos Basin
In addition to the pre-salt of the Santos Basin, the state-owned company announced US$ 23 billion in investments by 2029 to revitalize the Campos Basin, focusing on doubling the current production, which is around 500 thousand boe/day. The goal is to reach 1 million barrels of oil equivalent per day, expanding the conventional production base.
The most recent highlight in the region was the discovery of hydrocarbons in the pre-salt of the North Brava block, 105 km off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, made on March 25. This is another front that reinforces the role of the pre-salt as the main driver of Petrobras’ oil production for the coming years.
Petrobras’ Strategic Plan 2025-2029 Prioritizes Pre-Salt and New Discoveries
The company projects US$ 26 billion in decommissioning old units and modernizing offshore infrastructure, as part of Petrobras’ investments 2025-2029. The goal is to ensure operational safety, sustainability, and efficiency in all stages of the production process.
The sum of new platforms, recent discoveries, and goals set until 2029 shows a coordinated effort by the state-owned company to increase Petrobras’ oil production, with a strategic focus on high-productivity assets such as the Búzios Field.
National Production Data Consolidate Pre-Salt Leadership
In February 2025, Brazil produced 4.487 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d). Of these, 3.488 million were barrels of oil, and the remainder, natural gas.
The pre-salt accounted for 78.8% of national production, totaling 3.532 million boe/day, reinforcing the region’s relevance to the Brazilian energy matrix. Continued growth in this segment is supported by platforms such as the FPSO Almirante Tamandaré and new hydrocarbon discoveries in the pre-salt.
