Discovery near Arzachena mobilized specialized teams from Italy, revealed bronze coins from the 4th century in rare state of preservation and may indicate the presence of shipwreck debris on the seabed
A diver found a metallic object near the northeastern coast of Sardinia and led Italian authorities to the discovery of a large collection of ancient coins. The treasure, located near Arzachena, comprised between 30,000 and 50,000 bronze coins, dated from the first half of the 4th century. The find occurred in 2023.
Ancient coins were found near the coast of Arzachena
The discovery occurred in an underwater area near the beach, between sand and marine vegetation. The Italian Ministry of Culture reported that the diver alerted authorities after spotting something metallic on the seabed.
Specialized teams were sent to the location, including divers linked to the protection of artworks and professionals from the ministry’s underwater archaeology department. Firefighters and border police also participated in the location and recovery of the coins.

Treasure comprised up to 50,000 bronze coins
The exact quantity has not yet been confirmed, as the coins are undergoing sorting. The official estimate considers the total weight of the recovered material and points to at least 30,000 pieces, possibly reaching 50,000.
The coins are bronze and were dated from the first half of the 4th century. The ministry highlighted that all were in “excellent and rare state of preservation.” Even the few damaged pieces still had legible inscriptions.
State of preservation draws attention of archaeologists
For Luigi La Rocca, an employee of the Sardinia archaeology department, the find in the waters of Arzachena represents one of the most important coin discoveries in recent years.
The assessment reinforces the archaeological importance of the region, marked by the ancient circulation of people and goods through the Mediterranean. The seabed, in this case, preserved a large and well-preserved collection.
Location may indicate nearby wrecks
The ancient coins were found mainly in a wide sandy area, between the underwater marine vegetation and the beach.
Due to the location and the shape of the seabed, the Ministry of Culture reported that there may be shipwrecks nearby.
