Municipality with High Population Density Celebrates Anniversary with Shows, Permanent Fair in the Center, and Reactivation of Fountain in Public Square, Amid Urban Challenges of One of the Most Densely Populated Cities in the Country.
Taboão da Serra completed 67 years of political-administrative emancipation on February 19 and brought to the city center a program of shows and the announcement of a permanent arts and crafts fair, in a municipality of 20.388 km² that concentrates 13,416.81 inhabitants per km², according to data from the 2022 Census by IBGE.
The celebration came right after the end of “Taboão Folia”, which concluded on the Tuesday before the anniversary, and focused the attractions in Praça Nicola Vivilechio, in the center, with performances scheduled to start at 6 PM, as announced by the municipal management.
With a small territory and fully urban occupation, Taboão da Serra has gained the nickname “human ant hill” in reports about densification, a condition that pressures circulation, services, and maintenance of public areas, especially on event days that attract large audiences.

Anniversary Shows at Praça Nicola Vivilechio

The announced program for the anniversary included the sertanejo duo Wagner and Walmir, presented as “homegrown stars,” as well as the pagode group Casa Nossa and the sertanejo singer Tuta Guedes, with performances planned for Praça Nicola Vivilechio, a space that underwent interventions to host events.
During participation in a show on the Sunday before the anniversary, Mayor Engineer Daniel, from União Brasil, reinforced the invitation and described the schedule as aimed at different audiences, stating: “We will also have great events here [at the square], for all ages.”
When talking about the opening, he indicated the start time of the performances and linked the anniversary date to the recent cultural calendar, in an effort to maintain the flow of activities in the central region after the festive period, with expectations of concentrated audiences in the square.
Craft Fair Becomes Part of Sunday Program
In addition to the musical program, the city hall announced that the square would start hosting an arts and crafts fair beginning the Sunday after the anniversary, with plans to occur weekly and temporarily close surrounding streets in the morning.
The announcement was made by the mayor himself on stage, amidst applause, when he stated that the initiative would start in a test format and that, for at least a month, the municipality would evaluate the operation in the Center before consolidating the model.
In the same speech, he described the intention to attract families and informed about the installation of toys for children, in a strategy to occupy public space that, in practice, tends to increase the demand for traffic organization and cleaning in a city with a small area.
Floor Fountain Reactivated After Repairs
The municipal management also linked the leisure programming to the operation of the floor fountain at Praça Nicola Vivilechio, a system of water jets that come from the ground and are usually activated on hot days, with concentration of children and families in the central space.
Engineer Daniel mentioned the equipment, saying it would be on “so that the children can enjoy this summer,” referring to the use of the site as a resting and playing area during periods of more intense heat.
The reactivation of the system occurred after an operational pause at the beginning of the year and, according to reporting by the site Verbo Online, after a theft of cables that affected the operation of the pumps and required repair, before the resumption of water quality tests.
Dense City and Impacts on Urban Infrastructure
With a population of 273,542 people in the last census, Taboão da Serra has a level of densification that ranks among the highest in the country, which amplifies the impact of any large event on local mobility, bus and vehicle circulation, as well as pedestrian access to the central area.
In this scenario, actions such as street closures on Sundays and activation of leisure facilities require coordination to not compromise basic services, as the availability of alternative routes is limited and part of the urban dynamics depends on the connection with the capital of São Paulo.
While commenting on the implementation of the fair, the mayor also jokingly mentioned a regional “competition” by mentioning Embu das Artes, stating that residents would no longer need to travel to attend such fairs in neighboring cities.
The promise to value local artists, mentioned in the same context, adds to the effort to give continuous use to the square, which has been presented by the city hall as an event space, especially after interventions that sought to reconfigure the area to accommodate the public.
