The largest tires in the world are not just giant rubber pieces. They are constructs of advanced engineering, created to withstand the most extreme conditions in the mining industry. With over four meters in height and nearly a ton of steel, these tires impress not only by their size but also by the technology involved in their manufacturing and use.

Giant Tire: Solution for Heavy Industry

The creation of these giant tires arose in response to the demands of the mining and oil industries. The goal was simple: to increase productivity. Vehicles equipped with monumental tires can transport much larger loads, making operations more efficient and profitable.

How the Largest Tires in the World Are Manufactured

The production of the giant tire starts with the mixture of different types of rubber. This composition includes sulfur, carbon black — a petroleum derivative — and antioxidants.

This step ensures resistance and durability. Next, steel cables, essential for reinforcing the structure, are incorporated. The process ends with vulcanization, when the tire is molded with hot steam for up to 18 hours.

Impressive Specifications

The most famous model is the 59/80 R 63 XDR from Michelin. It has a diameter of 4.03 meters and a width of 1.48 meters. The structure contains 890 kilograms of steel and 3,850 kilograms of rubber. Each unit costs approximately US$ 42,500.

Transportation That Requires Creativity

Transporting such a voluminous piece of equipment requires creative solutions. Initially, the tires were transported lying down, taking up more space and requiring special escort. An Australian company changed this by proposing transportation upright. The new position reduced costs and increased safety.

More Time, Less Costs

Beyond size and logistics, the intelligent use of these tires also makes a difference. In 2015, Vale, at a unit in Peru, launched a project to extend the tires’ durability. The result was a 22% increase in usage time, with savings of US$ 480,000.

The analysis showed that factors such as road conditions, extreme heat, and truck suspension maintenance impacted wear. A total of 28 specific measures were adopted, raising the tire lifespan from 6,149 to 7,539 hours.

The world of giant tires demonstrates how engineering and strategy go hand in hand. With specific technologies and precise adjustments, these pieces continue to ensure efficiency in the world’s most demanding operations.
