With Superior Performance, Luxurious Finish, and an Impressive Equipment List, the New Chinese SUV Arrives in Brazil with Kicks Price to Challenge the Segment Leader.
The hybrid SUV market in Brazil has a new strong competitor: the GAC GS4 Hybrid. The model arrives with the bold proposal to surpass the Toyota Corolla Cross in technology, space, and, primarily, in price. Produced by GAC, the company responsible for manufacturing Toyota cars in China, the GS4 Hybrid presents itself as an alternative full of equipment that costs up to R$ 30,000 less than the rival.
Hybrid Engine: The Power That Impresses
The heart of the GAC GS4 Hybrid is a mechanical set that impresses. It combines a 2.0 naturally aspirated direct-injection engine with an electric motor, forming a full hybrid system. This means that the car manages the use of the engines and recharges its batteries automatically, without the need to plug it into a socket.
The system delivers a combined power of 235 horsepower. The torque of the combustion engine is 18 kgfm, while the electric motor offers a robust 30.5 kgfm. Weighing 1,673 kg, the power-to-weight ratio is 7.1 kg per horsepower, ensuring agile performance. The GAC GS4 Hybrid accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in about 8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 180 km/h.

While Brazil was left without an affordable 7-seater Honda, Indonesia sells the 2026 BR-V with a 1.5 i-VTEC engine of 121 hp, Honda Sensing, three rows, fuel consumption above 23 km/l, and a range of 987 km; the family SUV costs less than the Spin, Aircross, and Tiggo 8 Pro when converted without taxes.

Now NASA comes: Brazilian transforms pickups into “war tanks” in Goiânia by replacing wheels with giant tracks costing up to R$ 120,000 to tackle mud, farms, and impossible terrains.

Another Chinese giant prepares to enter Brazil: BAIC bets on the Arcfox T1, an electric hatchback that promises to compete with the BYD Dolphin, BYD Dolphin Mini, and Geely EX2 with a larger size and a range of up to 425 km.

Hyundai launches a 7-seater ‘Kombi’ cheaper than Chevrolet Spin, Citroën Aircross, and Tiggo 8 Pro in Brazil; for around R$ 78,500 in conversion without taxes, the Hyundai Stargazer Cartenz features a 1.5 engine, manual or IVT transmission, 205 mm ground clearance, and the SmartSense package that Brazilians don’t have yet, but Indonesia does.
It is important to note that, although GAC manufactures Toyotas in China, the engine is not the same as the Corolla line. The engine of the GS4 has the designation 4B20 L1, different from the M20A FXS used by Toyota.
Internal Space and Finish: A Level Above the Competition

One of the significant differentiators of the GAC GS4 Hybrid is its interior. The space is generous, with a wheelbase more than 10 cm longer than that of the Corolla Cross, resulting in remarkable comfort for all passengers, especially in the rear seat, which features a flat floor.
The finish is of high quality, with soft-touch materials on various surfaces. The seats are upholstered in leather and have electric adjustments for the driver and passenger. The trunk also stands out, with a capacity of 638 liters, which can be expanded to 1,586 liters with the seats folded. The opening and closing of the trunk are electric.
Technology and Standard Equipment
The SUV comes packed with technology. The equipment list includes adaptive cruise control (ACC), lane-keeping assist, full LED headlights with automatic high beams, and a 360º camera. The model also features a head-up display, panoramic sunroof, front seats with a ventilation system, and a wireless phone charger with a retractable mechanism.
The multimedia center is fast and intuitive, with integrated controls for air conditioning and volume on the screen. Currently, it only supports Apple CarPlay with a promise of an update for Android Auto.
Verdict: Is It Worth Investing in the New GAC GS4 Hybrid?
The GAC GS4 Hybrid is offered in two versions: Premium, for R$ 190,000, and Elite, for R$ 200,000. These prices place it in an extremely competitive position, being cheaper than the hybrid Corolla Cross and even top-of-the-line versions of lower-category SUVs.
The vehicle delivers more performance, more space, and a superior finish compared to its main rival. The suspension, with independent systems on all four wheels, is firmer than other Chinese models and has proven to be competent.
The main point of concern is that the brand is new in Brazil. The after-sales structure and parts availability are still an unknown. However, for the package offered, the GAC GS4 Hybrid establishes itself as one of the best value-for-money options in the market, certainly a choice that should be considered.
