Eucalyptus Fall Destroys Shelter, Leaves Hundreds of Birds Dead, Injures Others and Triggers Rescue, Veterinary Care and Environmental Alert to the Population in the Tocantina Region of Maranhão
More than 350 budgerigars died in the early hours of yesterday (28) after a tree fell during a strong storm in the village of Passagem Boa, in Lajeado Novo. The impact destroyed the shelter where the birds used to gather, creating a scene of loss and mobilizing residents and environmental agencies.
Storm Causes Destruction and Bird Deaths
According to the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio), the fallen tree was a eucalyptus and directly hit the area used by the budgerigars as a refuge.
With the fall, many animals were injured, dead, or unconscious. Some managed to fly again, while others were collected by residents of the area, who tried to prevent further losses.

The situation drew the attention of the local population early in the morning, when reports began circulating among residents, concerned about the number of birds on the ground.
Quick Action of Environmental Teams
The Integrated Management Center of ICMBio in Imperatriz was called around 10 a.m., after a veterinarian and professor from the State University of the Tocantina Region of Maranhão (Uemasul) received information about the incident.
Upon arrival, the teams found some birds already sheltered in a resident’s house.
Given this, ICMBio went around nearby homes and advised the population on the need to return wild animals.
Rescue, Care and Alert
In total, 32 budgerigars were rescued alive. They received immobilization, hydration and medication for pain relief, and were subsequently taken to Imperatriz.
On the morning of Thursday (29), the birds were sent to the Wildlife Animal Recovery Center of the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) in São Luís.
ICMBio emphasizes that keeping wild birds at home is an environmental crime and that voluntary return contributes to the recovery of wildlife.
The expectation is that, after specialized care, the budgerigars can be reintroduced into nature.
