Half A Million Beetle? Rare Example From Multinational Volkswagen Hits Record Value In São Paulo And Generates Controversy On Social Media!

The 1952 Split Window Beetle, a rare example from Volkswagen, was sold for almost half a million reais during the Antique Car Meeting in Águas de Lindóia, São Paulo. This is the highest amount ever paid for a Beetle in Brazil, at least among public sales and auctions.

The sale went viral on social media, with many internet users not understanding how an iconic Volkswagen beetle could be worth so much money. Some even speculated that the seller, in search of attention, might have faked the sale value.

The seller of the Beetle, Alex Fabiano, also known as GG, was located by UOL Cars. Upset with the criticisms from those who do not understand what they are talking about, Fabiano states that the initial value was R$ 460 thousand but the transaction was completed on April 22 for R$ 450 thousand.

“There are people judging me and saying that I lied about the price. These are people who have no knowledge about this car or the market. It even has original floor and screws”, points out Fabiano, according to whom this Beetle could be sold abroad for US$ 100 thousand (about R$ 500 thousand at direct conversion)”, said Alex, who also owns GG World Classic Cars.

According to him, the buyer, who split the amount into nine installments of R$ 50 thousand, is a lawyer from São Paulo and a major collector of vintage cars.

GG mentioned that he bought the model two years ago for R$ 350 and meticulously restored it using original parts from the vehicle’s manufacturing era. “The Beetle was inspected by the new owner, all the serial numbers match. It still has the manual and spare key, as well as the ‘little bananas’, which were the turn signals of the time”, he said.

The Iconic Volkswagen Beetles Are Trending In The Market

Car enthusiasts agree with Alex’s assessment that the Beetle is indeed worth what was paid. According to José Paulo Parra, owner of Circuito de Leilões, Beetles are in high demand in the market, especially those from the early years of manufacturing or the last ones.

Silvio Luiz, owner of the store Old is Cool Motors, stated that only those who are not in the know about the market are surprised by this price. “These units with the split rear window have been sold among collectors for prices above R$ 200 thousand and even greater than R$ 300 thousand, but these values are not disclosed. With the spike in the dollar value during the pandemic, the cost of these cars has also increased significantly, as there is a market for them abroad”, he said.

Volkswagen Lost Lawsuit Against Chinese Manufacturer For Outright Making And Selling A Copy Of The Iconic Beetle

The Chinese industry has not abandoned some old habits, and the Chinese manufacturer Great Wall Motors seems to care little about Volkswagen, making an outright clone of the Beetle. In a recent legal clash that captured the attention of the automotive sector, Volkswagen faced a significant defeat in a ruling preventing Great Wall Motors (GWM) from registering and selling its electric models Ora Punk Cat and Ballet Cat in Brazil.

Despite Volkswagen’s efforts, the Federal Regional Court of the 2nd region overturned the initial decision on March 4, favoring GWM. The court argued that there was no unfair competition, as the original Beetle has not been produced in Brazil since 1996, and its successor, known first as the New Beetle and then as Beetle again, ceased sales in 2020.

It’s Not New That The Chinese Create Clones

As if it weren’t enough to have cloned the Beetle, another Chinese automaker, SongSang Motors, made a clone of the iconic Kombi. Will it cause a “stir”? The Chinese manufacturer launched a new model inspired by an already existing one. In this case, it is SongSang Motors that presented the SS Summer, a van with a retro design clearly based on the Volkswagen Kombi or Type 2, as can be seen below.

Last year, the Chinese from Wey did not waste any time and ‘cloned’ the Ford Bronco, five days after the launch of the SUV from the American brand in 2020. Wey is also part of the Great Wall Motors group, the same one responsible for creating the electric ‘Beetle’. The Chinese brand Foton Big General also introduced an identical copy of the Ford F-150 Raptor last year. See below the ‘Chinese invention’.

I would love to know if you ever had a Beetle, own a Volkswagen car, or are thinking about getting one. Share your experience with the brand in the comments section. Don’t forget to leave 5 stars and activate CPG notifications to keep up with all the news in the automotive world. Until next time!
