Bahia Government Concludes Soil Investigation for the Construction of the Salvador-Itaparica Bridge, A Historic Milestone in Brazilian Engineering Advancing to the Foundation Phase.
A historic milestone in national engineering, the construction of the Salvador-Itaparica Bridge took a new step with the completion of soil investigations in the Bay of All Saints. The study, which lasted a year and reached unprecedented depths in Brazil, will now allow for the finalization of the foundation project and mobilization of the construction sites.
The Bahia Government also announced the release of new resources for construction management, reinforcing the importance of the partnership with China in this megaproject.
Unprecedented Boring Reaches 200 Meters Deep at the Salvador-Itaparica Bridge
After 12 months of intensive studies, the Bahia Government confirmed the conclusion of the geotechnical boring that will subsidize the construction of the awaited Salvador-Itaparica Bridge.

Thailand abandoned plans to cut through the country with a canal and chose a $28 billion mega-project on land: the Southern Landbridge will have 90 km, two giant ports, a railway, a highway, and pipelines to connect two seas and challenge the Strait of Malacca without handing over the strategic route to China.

Mali wants to open a path to the ocean by digging a 900 km waterway through the Senegal River: an $800 million project promises to reduce logistics costs by up to 60%, create a direct route to the Atlantic, and transform gold exports from one of Africa’s most isolated countries without relying on roads or railways.

A study in China revealed that the rubber seals that seal the submerged tunnels under the sea degrade much faster than previously thought when salinity and constant compression act together, losing up to 67% of their sealing strength over their lifespan, although existing structures are not at immediate risk.
The investigation reached depths of up to 200 meters, the largest ever recorded in infrastructure works in the country, exceeding the height of the Lacerda Elevator (72 meters) by more than twice.
The boring began on land, in the municipality of Vera Cruz, and extended through the shallow and deep waters of the Bay of All Saints, with drillings of up to 67 meters below the surface.

In total, 105 borings were carried out along the alignment of the future bridge. The samples were analyzed in an advanced technology laboratory set up specifically at the support yard.
Geological Differences Between Salvador and Itaparica Influence Foundations
According to the Bahia State Infrastructure Secretariat (Seinfra), the data obtained will allow for a precise definition of the structure’s foundations, considering the geological complexity of the region.
In the direction of Itaparica Island-Salvador, for example, a two-kilometer stretch with a thin layer of sedimentary soil followed by good-quality rock was identified.
In the following kilometers, heading towards the capital, the soil behavior changes drastically: long layers of sedimentary material overlaid on low-resistance rocks, interspersed with small bands of more rigid material.
These formations reflect the distinct geological age of the Bay of All Saints: while the section near Itaparica Island is about 66 million years old, the Salvador side dates back an impressive 241 million years.
Chinese Technology Ensures Precision Even in Adverse Conditions
The complexity of the project required the use of cutting-edge technologies, including a Chinese wave compensation system capable of maintaining the stability of the drilling platform even under intense climatic variations.
The operation also included a robust structure comprising three barges and an offshore drilling platform.
Investments and Job Creation for the Salvador-Itaparica Bridge in Bahia
The Salvador-Itaparica Bridge project has already mobilized over 20 Bahia companies, generating around 300 direct jobs. According to the state government, the total investment in this phase was approximately R$ 200 million.
As part of recent advancements, the Bahia Government, under the management of Jerônimo Rodrigues (PT), published in the State Official Diary (DOE) on May 9 the release of an additional R$ 2 million for the management of the work.
The resources will be allocated for technical and environmental supervision of the construction, as informed by Seinfra in a note:
“The Bahia Infrastructure Secretariat (Seinfra) informs that the Financial Decree published in the State Official Diary (DOE) this Friday (09) refers to a budget allocation for the management of the Salvador-Itaparica Bridge implementation project, with funds earmarked for companies contracted to supervise and oversee the work in terms of engineering and environmental aspects.”
Brazil-China Partnership: Infrastructure as a Strategic Link
The construction of the Salvador-Itaparica Bridge is one of the symbols of the growing cooperation between Brazil and China in the field of infrastructure.
The project is part of a package of initiatives that the Asian country intends to undertake in Brazilian territory, including railways and other modes of transportation. As stated by the Planning Minister, Simone Tebet (MDB):
The idea of China is to “tear through” Brazilian territory with the construction of railways.
This type of investment not only strengthens diplomatic and commercial ties between the nations but also boosts regional and national development with job creation and improved mobility.
Next Steps: Foundations and Start of Construction
With the boring phase concluded, the project now advances to the finalization of the foundations and mobilization of the construction sites.
Although the government has yet to disclose an official schedule for these phases, the recent investments indicate that the execution of the Salvador-Itaparica Bridge is increasingly closer to becoming a reality.
The project, in addition to reducing travel time between Salvador and Itaparica Island, promises to transform the logistics, tourism, and economy of the metropolitan region and the Recôncavo Baiano.
