What Are The Reasons Behind This Decision And How Can It Impact Postal Services And Consumers Across The Country? Discover The Details Of This Significant Change.
Correios announced the closure of 38 units of the agencies known as CEM (Corporate Mail), scheduled to occur on February 1. The decision, disclosed internally on December 27, also includes the downsizing of 19 of the 49 agencies that will remain operational.
The CEM are specialized in serving businesses, offering personalized services. According to the state-owned company, the measure was based on a technical study conducted in October, which pointed out the low economic viability of these units.
The financial impact is one of the main reasons presented by the company. With the closure of operations, the forecast is for savings of approximately R$ 8 million.

However, the measure was not well received by unions, which questioned the decision in internal communications. “Isn’t it contradictory for the Presidency of Correios to close the 38 (thirty-eight) CEM units? And what about the Correios’ policy for customer centrality, how will the customers being served fare?,” they questioned in a statement.
Official Statement from Correios
In response to the site Poder360, the state-owned company justified the action as necessary to reduce expenses and attributed the creation of these units to the previous administration. “The Corporate Mail agencies were created by the previous management. The current assessment conducted by the company’s technical areas indicates that the closed units were not delivering the expected results. Thus, the decision aimed to optimize resources, valuing the company’s business and the public interest,” stated the official note.

The measure provoked criticism from entrepreneurs who use the personalized services of the CEM agencies. Many claim that the closure of these units may hinder service quality and generate difficulties for companies that depend on agile and centralized logistical support.
Meanwhile, the management of Correios maintains the decision and asserts that the changes aim at modernization and strengthening the company, in light of financial and operational challenges. The restructuring marks another step in the attempt to make the state-owned company more competitive in the logistics market.
