Customers of More Than 60 Banks in Brazil Should Be Aware. This Is Because They Have Come Under The Radar of a New Virus, Created With A Focus on Stealing Data and Also Credentials From These Individuals.

According to a note published by Kaspersky, a cybersecurity company, the new virus is called Coyote and reaches the user disguised as an update for applications on Windows. Thus, when installed, it begins to monitor the device with a focus on stealing information without the user noticing.

According to Kaspersky, experts studying the virus highlighted that there is a clear concern due to the use of less popular programming languages and unusual distribution systems. Criminals are doing this in an attempt to escape the monitoring of protection software and measures of this kind taken by the users themselves.

In this sense, Kaspersky reports that two examples of this are the use of the Squirrell installer to deploy the threat in Windows applications and the use of the Nim language, used with the aim of completing the contamination.

Furthermore, according to the company, after manipulating scripts that ensure the persistence of the plague on the victim’s computer, criminals send the data using advanced encryption, which is another way to avoid detection.

Banks Are Targets of The Virus

According to Kaspersky, the Coyote virus has the ability to intercept data from at least 61 banks, credit companies, and fintechs. In this sense, when installed, the virus is capable of performing actions such as taking screenshots, logging keystrokes, and even manipulating pages to divert transfers and other operations.

In addition, the Coyote virus would also be capable of performing what is popularly known as the “ghost hand scam.” In this case, it takes control of the victim’s device and thus executes operations on their behalf.

Not to mention, the virus also has the ability to move the mouse and perform clicks. Additionally, it displays update alerts that take up the entire screen (while activities occur in the background) and can even disable antivirus software or shut down the PC entirely.

Banking Viruses on The Rise in Brazil

In the alert issued by Kaspersky, Fabio Assolini, director of the company’s global research and analysis team, emphasized that the arrival of Coyote serves as a reminder of the precautions to take. In this sense, he details that the presence of malware targeting the banking system has almost doubled since 2021, with 18 million cases recorded just last year.

According to the specialist, this growth accompanies the rising challenges of cybersecurity itself. However, it raises a special alert for Brazil, responsible for almost 90% of all global infections recorded by Coyote.

How To Protect Yourself From Coyote

So far, it is still not possible to pinpoint the exact method of the virus’s dissemination. Thus, the advice is to be cautious when downloading apps, which should only be done from recognized sites and trusted vendors.

Additionally, it is always good to highlight that users should avoid clicking on links received via messaging apps or social media. Another necessary factor is to keep antivirus or other security software always active and updated on PCs and mobile devices, as they help detect threats of this kind.
