Students Now Have Voice! Detran-MS Launches An Innovative System That Allows Evaluating Driving Instructors. With A High Rate Of Failures And Complaints About The Quality Of Teaching, This Innovation Can Transform Learning For The DL! See How It Works And The Impact Of This Change On Brazilian Traffic!

The high failure rate in the practical tests for the National Driver’s License (DL) has sparked debates about the quality of education offered by driving schools in Brazil.

Among the main complaints from students are the lack of patience from some instructors, ineffective teaching methods, and even the poor condition of the vehicles used during lessons.

To try to reverse this scenario and ensure more transparency in the driver’s training process, the State Department of Traffic of Mato Grosso do Sul (Detran-MS) launched a new system: an evaluation of instructors made by the students themselves.

The initiative arises in a concerning context.

In 2024, more than 114 thousand candidates took the practical exam to obtain their first license, with 37,860 for Category A (motorcycles) and 76,199 for Category B (automobiles).

However, the numbers show that approval is still far from ideal.

Only 61.7% of candidates were considered fit in Category A, while in Category B the rate dropped to 49.6%, which represents a total of 54,416 failures.

How Does The Evaluation Of Instructors Work?

With the new evaluation system implemented by Detran-MS, students will be able to rate and report their experiences with vehicle practice instructors.

The goal is to identify professionals who perform below expectations and promote improvements in teaching.

The evaluation forms will be available at the end of the practical course and will allow students to assess various aspects, such as:

  • Instructor’s patience and teaching style;
  • Condition of the vehicle used during lessons;
  • Punctuality and commitment of the professional;
  • Ability to adapt to the student’s learning pace.

According to Detran-MS, the information collected will be used to monitor the quality of the service provided by driving schools and could even influence future inspections and corrective measures.

The Impact Of Failures On The Training Of New Drivers

The high failure rate in the practical exam has several consequences.

Many candidates experience frustration and demotivation, in addition to the financial impact, as each new attempt requires payment of additional fees.

This factor can delay the acquisition of the license and hinder access to the job market for those who depend on the DL to pursue a profession.

Furthermore, experts point out that frequent failures may indicate flaws in the teaching method adopted by driving schools, reinforcing the need for a more rigorous evaluation system for instructors.

Transparency And Improvements In The Licensing Process

Detran-MS believes that the initiative to allow the evaluation of instructors could make the process of obtaining the DL fairer and more efficient.

With more detailed monitoring, it is expected that driving schools will invest in the training of their professionals and in improving the structure provided to students.

Another positive aspect of the evaluation system is that it gives voice to the students, who often felt powerless in the face of neglect or unpreparedness from instructors.

Now, their opinions can directly influence the decisions of the traffic authority.

Similar Measures May Be Adopted In Other States

Although the initiative has been implemented by Detran-MS, there is a possibility that other states will adopt similar measures in the future.

The modernization of teaching in driving schools is an urgent need, especially in light of technological advancements and changes in Brazilian traffic.

For those who wish to obtain the DL and want to evaluate their instructors, Detran-MS informs that the evaluation form will be available on the official website of the agency and can also be filled out in person at Detran offices throughout the state.

The expectation is that, over time, the quality of driver training will improve significantly, reducing not only the failure rate but also accidents caused by inexperienced or ill-prepared drivers.
