Free Identity Document Can Now Be Requested in August Throughout Brazil. New National Identity Card Uses CPF as Unique Number and Brings Advancements Against Fraud
Starting in August 2025, all Brazilians can request the free identity document with the new National Identity Card (CIN), valid throughout the national territory. This measure marks a historic transformation in the country’s civil identification system, unifying the CPF as a unique number and replacing the old state models.
The new card aims to increase security against fraud, standardize records, and facilitate access to public and private services. With features such as QR Code and integration with the Gov.br app, the CIN enhances the protection of personal data in accordance with the General Data Protection Law (LGPD) and can even function as a travel document for participating countries.
What Changes with the New Free Identity Document?
The National Identity Card replaces the old models with a nationally standardized system. The CPF becomes the only valid civil identification number, ending the use of different numbering by state.

Additionally, the CIN introduces security technology elements, such as:
- QR Code for instant verification by authorities and institutions;
- MRZ (Machine Readable Zone), which can be read by international systems, allowing it to be used as a travel document where there is a bilateral agreement;
- Integration with GOV.BR, allowing citizens to access the updated digital version.
The 9 Brazilian states that already have fully integrated systems for issuing the new National Identity Card (CIN) are:
Acre, Alagoas, Amazonas, Federal District, Goiás, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Piauí, Rio Grande do Sul.
Who Can Request the CIN and How to Make the Request?
All Brazilians, of any age, can request the new identity for free. The process can be done at state identification institutes such as Poupatempo (SP), Vapt-Vupt (GO) or Detran (RJ), which are already integrated into the national system.
It is necessary to present:
- Updated birth or marriage certificate;
- Regularized CPF number;
- Proof of address.
The first copy is free, and the issuance of the CIN will follow the federal government’s schedule along with the states, which have already received guidance from the Ministry of Management and Innovation.
What Are the Practical Benefits for Citizens?
The new identity eliminates data fragmentation between states and simplifies citizens’ lives. With a single number (CPF), it will be possible to:
- Open bank accounts;
- Access public services;
- Travel to partner countries;
- Reduce documentation requirements in registrations and contracts.
Moreover, centralizing information reduces the chances of identity fraud, a recurring problem in Brazil. The integration with the government’s digital system also improves data accuracy and reduces errors in databases.
What Happens to the Old RG?
The previous model will still be accepted until 2032, but the government’s recommendation is for Brazilians to update the document in the coming years. The replacement is gradual and the transition will respect the implementation schedule in the states.
The validity of the new CIN varies according to age:
- 0 to 12 years: validity of 5 years;
- 12 to 60 years: validity of 10 years;
- Above 60 years: indefinite validity.
Does the Digital Document Also Count as Identity?
Yes. The CIN can be accessed via the Gov.br app, with legal validity for presentation in public and private establishments. The digital version contains the same data and security features as the physical one, including the QR Code for verification.
The digitization of the document meets the demand for modernization of public management and enhances access, especially in regions with poor infrastructure or long distances to physical offices.
Did you already know about this change? Do you believe that the new model will really make daily life easier or are there still points to improve? Leave your opinion in the comments; we want to know how you see this transformation in the way of identifying oneself in Brazil.
