European companies Airbus, Thales, and Leonardo are joining forces to develop a new joint company in the satellite sector, nicknamed Project Bromo. The goal is to compete with Starlink, by Elon Musk, which dominates the low Earth orbit satellite market. This strategic initiative aims to strengthen the European aerospace sector, consolidating the region’s position in an increasingly competitive market.

Project Bromo: A Strategic Step for Europe

Project Bromo is an innovative initiative that aims to integrate satellite assets from the three European giants. Unlike traditional mergers, this collaboration bets on a model based on MBDA, a missile manufacturer that is already a successful partnership between Airbus, Leonardo, and BAE Systems. The format allows for greater synergy, without one company needing to acquire the assets of the others.

This strategic move seeks to face the rapid growth of Starlink, which has been expanding its global satellite network at an impressive speed. While Musk’s company continues to gain market share, the European space sector faces financial challenges, reinforcing the need for innovation and cooperation among regional players.

Why Is Project Bromo Crucial for Europe?

1. Compete on a Global Scale

The growing popularity of Starlink highlights the importance of low Earth orbit satellites for high-speed communications. Europe, which still struggles to achieve this scale, needs efficient and competitive solutions. Project Bromo could be an answer, creating a “European champion” to compete in the global market.

2. Focus on Innovation and Efficiency

The structure of the new company will allow for greater efficiency in resource use and a focus on technological innovation. By combining the assets of the three companies, Project Bromo can reduce operational costs and accelerate the development of new solutions, placing Europe in a prominent position in the space sector.

3. Strengthen the Local Aerospace Industry

In addition to creating direct competition for Starlink, the project aims to revitalize the European aerospace industry, which is facing financial difficulties. With a collaborative strategy, the initiative can generate jobs, attract investments, and promote technological autonomy for the region.

Challenges and Perspectives of Project Bromo

Although ambitious, Project Bromo is not without challenges. Negotiations are still in the early stages, and implementation may take years. Furthermore, the need to align different organizational cultures and business strategies among Airbus, Thales, and Leonardo could create complexity in the process.

However, Leonardo’s CEO, Roberto Cingolani, emphasized that the MBDA-based structure offers a reliable model for the partnership. This innovative format has already proven to be efficient in other sectors, as Project Bromo could be a landmark in the history of the European space industry.
