Moraes Orders Total Block on Financial Resources of Starlink, Elon Musk’s Company, Raising Questions About the Future of Operations
On August 18th, Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) ordered the blocking of all financial resources of Starlink Holding in Brazil. The measure directly affects the company of Elon Musk, who owns X (formerly Twitter), and aims to ensure the payment of fines imposed by Brazilian courts on the social media platform. The decision was reported by journalist Valdo Cruz on g1’s blog.
The blocking of Starlink’s funds is part of a series of actions by the STF against Elon Musk’s company, in response to the non-compliance with judicial orders by X.
The Starlink group, which provides satellite internet services in Brazil, was officially notified, along with its executives, to take responsibility for the amounts owed to the Brazilian Judiciary. The measure is seen as an attempt to ensure that the imposed penalties are effectively enforced.

Starlink has been operating in Brazil since February 2022, focusing its services mainly in the northern region of the country. The company offers satellite internet plans for residential use, travel, and vessels, being one of the few to provide connectivity in remote areas.
On the same day the decision was announced, Elon Musk publicly stated that X would cease its operations in Brazil. According to the billionaire, Alexandre de Moraes’s decisions would be censoring the platform, which is why he no longer sees the viability of keeping the social network active in the country. Musk even used the platform itself to mock the STF minister, posting an AI-generated image comparing him to villains from popular movies like “Harry Potter” and “Star Wars.”
The situation became even more complicated on the night of Wednesday, August 28th, when Alexandre de Moraes gave X a 24-hour deadline to indicate a legal representative in Brazil. Since the company had closed its office in the country and had no official representative, the summons had to be made directly through the social network.
The decision to block Starlink’s resources in Brazil raises questions about the company’s future in the country, especially considering that Starlink is one of the few providers of internet in hard-to-reach areas. Elon Musk, who was already facing regulatory challenges in various parts of the world, now has another obstacle to overcome in his attempt to expand his business in Latin America.
In addition to the financial consequences, the block imposed by the STF could have larger implications for Starlink’s global operations. Elon Musk’s company, which had already invested significantly in Brazil, now faces uncertainties about its ability to continue offering its services in the country.
Will Elon Musk Take Starlink Out of Brazil?
The future of Starlink in Brazil is at risk due to a block on financial resources, which may lead Elon Musk to consider a drastic measure: laying off all company employees in the country. This potentially radical decision could seriously compromise the continuity of satellite internet provision for remote and urban areas in Brazil.
Meanwhile, in a scenario where Starlink ceased operations in Brazil, Minister Alexandre de Moraes could intervene, as he previously did with platform X, and determine the complete shutdown of the company’s activities in Brazil.
