Aneel Activates Red Flag 2 in August, the Most Expensive Light Bill. Energy Will Have an Additional Charge of R$ 7.87 for Every 100 kWh Consumed.

The red flag 2 has been confirmed by Aneel (National Electric Energy Agency) for the month of August, making the electricity bill even heavier for Brazilians.

The announcement was made this Friday (25), with the information that an additional charge of R$ 7.87 will be applied for every 100 kWh consumed, the highest rate provided in the tariff flag system.

According to the regulatory agency, the activation of the most expensive flag is due to reduced rainfall and low reservoir levels, which compromises hydroelectric generation.

To compensate, it will be necessary to use thermoelectric plants, which have a higher operational cost. Aneel warns about the conscious use of electricity during this crisis period.

Understand What Red Flag 2 Is and Why It Was Activated

The tariff flag system acts as a warning signal to consumers about the cost of electricity generation.

The red flag 2 represents the highest level, being activated when generation conditions become critical.

According to an official note from Aneel, “the scenario of inflows below average across the country reduces generation through hydroelectric plants.

This situation raises the costs of electricity generation, due to the need to activate more expensive sources, such as thermoelectric plants.”

Red Flag Has Been in Effect Since June

The worsening hydrological scenario in Brazil had already led to the activation of the red flag 1 in June, with maintenance in July.

According to Aneel, the water scarcity in reservoirs already required the use of thermal sources, but the situation has intensified, now forcing the use of red flag 2.

This is the first activation of red flag 2 since October 2024, marking a concerning return of the extra charge amid a challenging economic scenario.

With the increase, consumers should prepare for significant adjustments in the upcoming bills.

Experts Project Direct Impact on IPCA and Inflation

The increase in the energy tariff, driven by the red flag, is expected to have a direct impact on inflation rates.

According to Warren Investimentos’ inflation strategist, Andréa Angelo, the trend is worsening: “It will still get worse. Energy will be the highlight in the upcoming IPCA [Broad Consumer Price Index] releases,” she stated in June while commenting on the activation of the first red flag.

With the higher energy costs, the ripple effect on production and consumption costs may spread to other sectors, affecting the prices of goods and services in the daily lives of Brazilians. Pressure on family budgets increases, especially among low-income households.

Aneel Emphasizes the Importance of Conscious Energy Use

Given the current scenario, Aneel advises consumers to adopt measures for saving and responsibly using electricity.

Among the tips are unplugging devices when not in use, avoiding long showers, and preferring the use of more efficient equipment.

The agency emphasizes that, in addition to financial relief, conscious consumption helps preserve water resources and avoid new increases in tariffs.

What to Expect in the Coming Months

Despite the forecast of rain in the last months of the year, experts believe that the light bill will only start to decrease at the end of 2025.

The trend is that the red flag will remain in effect until the water volume in reservoirs normalizes, which may take time depending on climatic conditions.

Until then, consumers should prepare for higher tariffs and impacts on their budgets. Monitoring consumption, adjusting habits, and staying alert to Aneel’s upcoming updates are essential actions to face the current energy scenario in the country.
