See The List Of Shipyards With Stalled Works, Offshore Units Nearing Completion, And Which Will Be Hired In The Future
In Rio de Janeiro, every week employees of the Mauá Shipyard need to use suction pumps on a vessel docked at the site to remove water entering through a crack in the hull. As its construction was not completed because Mauá had to cease operations in 2015, this vessel has been suffering from the elements, without repairs and periodic maintenance, it is gradually rusting and deteriorating.
Edson Rocha, who leads the Metalworkers’ Union, said he feels saddened by this scenario. It’s simply a lot of money wasted with this vessel sitting at the dock. But moving forward, when we recover from the crisis (if), the costs to complete the repairs will be exorbitant.
At this moment, there are 3 vessels with unfinished works at the Mauá Shipyard, but the list of this “Steel Cemetery” extends throughout the country. This is a reflection of the corruption scandals orchestrated within Petrobras.

Exploring shipyards in Brazil, it was discovered that there are many offshore units stalled in shipyards at various stages of construction. The total number of idle units is:
- 3 ships
- 7 rigs
- 1 hull
- 4 inland waterway convoys
Would you believe that if we combined all these stalled units, the amount of the loss easily reaches US$6 billion? (commercial dollar)
Like, there are many jobs that are not being generated, and the cost only increases if these units remain idle in the shipyards. At the time, these vessels were ordered for prices much higher than the international market, but since the goal was to favor Brazilian labor and the economy, they were approved here, which ultimately didn’t help much after the crisis hit. See below the shipyards with units in the yard:
- Atlântico Sul Shipyard (Ipojuca, PE) – 4 rigs
- Jurong (Aracruz, ES) – 1 rig
- Ilha SA Shipyard (Rio de Janeiro, RJ) – 3 container ships
- Mauá (Niterói, RJ) – 3 oil tankers
- Brasfels (Angra dos Reis, RJ) – 2 rigs
- Rio Tietê Shipyard (Araçatuba, SP) – 4 inland waterway convoys
- Ecovix (Rio Grande, RS) – 1 Hull of the P-71 platform
Remember that all these shipyards are undergoing judicial recovery, some have even
stated that they intend to resume some works this year, but if they cannot, 2018 is certain. According to the union and the companies managing the shipyards, starting this semester, there will be prospects for improvements due to interest from the private sector.
