US Astronaut Shares Transformative Experience Observing Earth from Space and Reveals Crucial Alert About the Planet’s Vulnerability, Highlighting Human Impact and the Importance of Sustainability for Humanity’s Future.

Overview Effect and the Transformation of the View of Earth

The view of planet Earth from space continues to transform human understanding of sustainability, responsibility, and the future.

The former astronaut of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Ron Garan, shared a unique experience after spending 178 days in orbit and completing 2,842 laps around the planet.

His journey, which covered over 114 million kilometers, brought to light the phenomenon known as the Overview Effect, a phenomenon described by astronauts when observing Earth as a whole, without borders, highlighting the beauty and, mainly, the vulnerability of our planet.

The Fragility of Earth’s Atmosphere

Garan, in a recent interview, described that, upon contemplating the atmosphere from space, he identified a protective layer so thin that it proved to be even more fragile than any scientific prediction or image published in textbooks.

“I realized that everything that sustains life on Earth depends on a fragile layer, almost like paper”, stated the former astronaut.

He emphasized that, from the International Space Station, it is possible to see lightning cutting across the planet like flashes, northern lights in continuous motion, and the silent presence of an almost imperceptible atmosphere.

The Awakening Caused by the Overview Effect

The absence of noise, the dark immensity of the cosmos, and the delicate layer enveloping the planet resulted in a kind of “awakening.”

For Garan, the perception of the interconnectedness between all terrestrial systems — from the biosphere to society — became undeniably clear.

In his assessment, issues such as climate change, deforestation, and ecological collapse cannot be viewed in isolation.

According to him, these phenomena are merely symptoms of a deeper crisis: humanity’s disconnection from its own home.

Astronaut’s Warning: Urgent Changes in Mindset

In his statement, the astronaut was emphatic in asserting: “We are living a lie. Until we change this mindset, we will remain in crisis.”

For Garan, the global society makes a grave mistake by treating Earth as a disposable resource, placing the economy above the planet and society.

His proposal is straightforward: reverse this logic and prioritize the environment above all, followed by society, and only then, the economy.

Vulnerable Atmosphere Demands Reevaluation

Throughout his space missions, Ron Garan was impacted by the realization that the Earth’s protective “shell” is extremely thin and, therefore, highly vulnerable.

This reality, he states, demands an urgent reevaluation of how humanity consumes natural resources, produces waste, and interacts with the environment.

The Overview Effect: Change of Consciousness in Space

Garan’s experience exemplifies the so-called Overview Effect — a term that denotes the change of consciousness experienced by astronauts when they view Earth as a single organism, without artificial divisions or national barriers.

He describes this phenomenon as a moment of absolute clarity, where everything seems interconnected and makes profound sense.

According to the former astronaut, every daily choice — from energy consumption to product selection — takes on new meaning in light of planetary vulnerability.

Sustainability and Global Cooperation as a Mission

After leaving NASA, Garan directed his career towards projects focused on sustainability and global cooperation, collaborating with various international organizations.

In his lectures and publications, he emphasizes that the transformation of the planet depends on a collective change of perception, based on concrete data about the human impact on the environment.

Current Data Reinforces the Alert About Earth

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere reached a new record in 2024, surpassing 424 parts per million.

The global report released by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in March 2023 also warned of the increase in extreme weather events and the risk of irreversible imbalance, should humanity maintain unsustainable practices.

Data from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) of Brazil reinforces that deforestation in the Amazon has decreased in 2024, but pressure on biomes remains high due to economic activities.

The Overview Effect and Collective Responsibility

The account of Ron Garan directly relates to these statistics, advocating that political, business, and individual decisions should be guided by sustainability.

The defense of the environment needs to be integrated into the logic of development and collective well-being.

In his view, the shift in perspective that occurs in space should translate into practical actions on Earth.

The Urgency Concerning the Planet’s Future

According to experts, Garan’s call to action comes at a critical moment for the planet.

Studies published in the scientific journal Nature in 2025 show that the global average temperature continues to rise and that greenhouse gas emissions remain above the level considered safe to avoid severe impacts.

The scientists’ warning is that if society does not prioritize environmental protection policies and energy transition, extreme events such as droughts, floods, and heatwaves are likely to become more frequent.

The Perception of the Overview Effect and Planetary Survival

The approach of the former NASA astronaut reinforces that, when observing Earth from space, borders cease to exist, and the only real division is that created by a lack of collective awareness.

The Overview Effect, by transforming astronauts’ perception, also highlights how much everyone’s survival depends on a protected atmosphere and sustainable decisions.
