Less affected by the lack of semiconductors, Toyota reopens the 3rd factory shift in Sorocaba, in the interior of the state of São Paulo
Toyota announced yesterday, Thursday (02/09), that it will reopen a third work shift at the factory in Sorocaba, in the interior of the state of São Paulo, starting in January. The Japanese automaker, little affected by the semiconductor crisis, will operate a 24-hour shift, the company will hire 450 employees starting this month. Another 50 jobs will be created in other units of the group and 350 in the supply chain in the region. As mentioned elsewhere, in an interview with Jornal Cruzeiro do Sul, Toyota Brasil informed on July 6th that it was already studying the possibility of resuming with the 3rd shift at the factory in Sorocaba, in the interior of the state of São Paulo, the from next year. The company at the time had not yet confirmed the possible new jobs to be generated at the factory, but speculation estimated that 400 jobs would be created.
Toyota Brasil said that the company has constantly evaluated the various internal and market scenarios to ensure the sustainability of its operations in the country. And for this reason, it confirms that it is in dialogue with the union to analyze the viability of the third shift at the Sorocaba factory starting in 2022. The number of possible new job openings has not yet been confirmed.
Toyota's management had decided to adopt the third shift in Brazil in 2018, something rare in the automaker's factories, which is why the Japanese headquarters took a long time to be convinced to authorize the measure. At the time, the extra shift was considered the most viable solution, without the need to invest in a new plant, to meet the expected growth in the region's markets and the launch of yet another model made in Sorocaba, the Yaris hatch and sedan, launched in second half of 2018, which joined the Etios (also with the two bodies) already produced at the unit since 2012.
Expansion of production at the factory in Sorocaba
Toyota's factory, in the interior of the state of São Paulo, will expand its production capacity from the current 122 units a year to 152. The unit produces the Yaris, Etios models (for export only) and the Corolla Cross, the brand's first SUV manufactured in the country and launched in March. The SUV has a hybrid/flex version – runs on energy and gasoline or ethanol and is sold in 22 countries in the region.
The announcement was made by the president of Toyota do Brasil, Rafael Chang, to Governor João Doria at the end of the afternoon on Thursday, 2nd. According to the executive, the measure will meet the growing demand for the brand's products in Brazil and Latin America. and is part of the company's sustainable growth strategy and its commitment to the country, despite the challenges that the entire industry is facing due to the covid-19 pandemic. The factory already had three work shifts between November 2018 and June 2019.
Partnership with the government of the state of São Paulo
The Governor of São Paulo, João Doria was alongside the President of Toyota do Brasil, Rafael Chang, and highlighted that they were together in 2019 on a visit to Toyota's headquarters in Japan and now, as a result of that, there is the expansion of the Toyota factory.
