About the Federal Institute of Espírito Santo – Ifes
The Federal Institute of Education, Science, and Technology of Espírito Santo (Ifes) is a federal public institution focused on offering professional, scientific, and technological education at different levels.
Commonly referred to as Ifes, its administrative headquarters is located at Avenida Rio Branco, nº 50, Santa Lúcia neighborhood, in Vitória – ES.
Ifes was established in December 2008, following the enactment of Law No. 11,892, which created 38 Federal Institutes throughout Brazil.
In Espírito Santo, the new institution was formed by the merger of the Federal Center for Technological Education of Espírito Santo (Cefetes), the Alegre Federal Agricultural School, the Colatina Federal Agricultural School, and the Santa Teresa Federal Agricultural School.
Its history, however, is over a century old: Cefetes, for example, originated in 1909 as the School of Artisan Apprentices of Espírito Santo, established during Nilo Peçanha’s government.
At the time of its creation, Ifes already comprised 12 units spread across the state, in addition to the then Center for Distance Education (Cead), now referred to as Center for Reference in Training and Distance Education (Cefor).
Since then, the network has continued to grow. Between 2010 and 2015, new campuses were inaugurated in various cities, and in 2015, the Institute also created the Innovation Hub of Vitória, aimed at meeting industry demands through applied research.
Currently, Ifes offers a range of programs from technical courses to strict master’s degree programs, encompassing 99 technical courses, 68 undergraduate courses, 46 specialization and enhancement courses, 12 master’s degrees, and 1 professional doctorate. In total, there are over 40,000 enrolled students.
The institutional expansion is one of Ifes’ hallmarks.
In 2021, the establishment of Campus Presidente Kennedy was authorized, and the Innovation City was launched in Vitória, in the former IBC warehouses, with the proposal to be a platform aimed at human, economic, and sustainable development.
In 2022, the campuses of Laranja da Terra and Pedro Canário were created. Already in 2024, the Federal Government announced the installation of a new unit in Muniz Freire, raising the total to 26 campuses in the state.
With a presence in all micro-regions of Espírito Santo, Ifes currently has 23 operational campuses, 3 being established, 49 distance education centers, the Innovation Hub, and the Innovation City.
This reach makes the institution one of the main drivers of scientific, technological, economic, and social development in Espírito Santo.
