Survey published by Nexo Jornal, based on geographic data from IBGE, shows which are the largest borders between Brazilian states. The leadership is with Bahia and Minas Gerais, while Minas also appears on the borders with Goiás and São Paulo; Pará, Mato Grosso, and Amapá complete the group of the five largest extensions
The largest state border in Brazil is between Bahia and Minas Gerais. The line that separates the two states is 1,652 kilometers long, according to a survey published by Nexo Jornal based on geographic data from the IBGE.
The size is noteworthy because it even surpasses major territorial connections between states in the North and Midwest regions, areas known for their territorial size.
The Nexo study organized the extensions of internal borders between Brazilian federation units. The base comes from IBGE, the body responsible for producing and updating the country’s official geographic information.

Minas Gerais appears in three of the largest state borders in the country
Besides leading the list alongside Bahia, Minas Gerais also appears among the three largest Brazilian borders. The second largest is the border between Minas Gerais and Goiás, with about 1,554 km. Next is the border between Minas Gerais and São Paulo, with approximately 1,524 km.
This prominence helps explain the geographic importance of Minas Gerais on the national map. The state is centrally located in the Southeast and borders several federation units, which increases the extent of its contact lines with other states.
Among the five largest borders, there are also two connections involving Pará. The border between Pará and Mato Grosso totals about 1,405 km, while the border between Pará and Amapá is approximately 1,404 km.
The numbers show that the largest state borders in the country are not concentrated in a single region, but involve states from the Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, and North.
Bahia is the state that borders the most other states
The survey also highlights that Bahia borders eight states, the highest number in the country. Minas Gerais comes right after, bordering seven states. This territorial configuration helps explain why the border between Bahia and Minas Gerais appears at the top of the national ranking.
State borders are more than lines on maps. They influence territorial planning, public management, logistics, infrastructure, oversight, administrative division, and integration between regions. Therefore, official IBGE data is used as a reference to organize and update the reading of Brazilian territory.
In the case of the list organized by Nexo, the most impressive data is the distance of the first place: the 1,652 km between Bahia and Minas Gerais easily surpass many long road routes within the country and reveal the little-perceived dimension of Brazil’s internal borders.
