Macron Aims to Sell Rafale Fighters to FAB. Additionally, the French President Also Promises to Assist the Country in a New Nuclear Submarine Project.

During his recent visit to Brazil, President Emmanuel Macron demonstrated that he still has an interest in selling Rafale fighters to the Brazilian Air Force (FAB). Just over a decade ago, the French fighter lost the competition for the FX-2 project to the Saab F-39, which currently equips the FAB.

Macron arrived in Brazil on March 26 and participated in a series of meetings with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. One of the events was the launching of one of the new Riachuelo-class submarines of the Brazilian Navy, the S42 Tonelero.

The vessel is based on the French Scorpène class and was developed in partnership with the European country. The President emphasized that Brazil and France are cooperating to develop a Brazilian nuclear submarine based on the Riachuelo, a program that has faced delays. In the same speech, Macron mentioned another relevant French military product, the Rafale fighters.

Speaking about the aircraft, which were once the favorites for the FX-2 program, the French president stated that nothing is lost. According to him, perhaps it is time to reignite the discussion about the Rafale Fighters, as nothing is ever truly lost.

Between 2009 and 2013, the Dassault Rafale competed for the Brazilian new fighter aircraft program against the Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet from the United States and the then Gripen NG from Sweden. The Rafale fighters were even announced winners of the bidding in 2010, but the Government’s decision was annulled, with the Swedish fighter being chosen by the FAB three years later for technical reasons.

In addition to the possible purchase of the Rafale fighters, President Lula announced alongside French President Emmanuel Macron, a partnership between the countries that anticipates the exchange of technology for the construction of a Brazilian nuclear submarine. Lula told the French president: “Tell the French that Brazil seeks the knowledge of nuclear technology, not to wage war, but to assure countries that want peace that Brazil will stand with all of them.”

The Brazilian president highlighted that a “problem of animosity towards the democratic process” affects both Brazil and the rest of the world, and emphasized that the partnership with France will allow the two important countries to prepare to coexist with this animosity without worrying about any type of war, as Brazil is a defender of peace.

Brazilian Nuclear Submarine May Be Ready by 2031

Lula and Macron made statements during the inaugural ceremony of the Tonelero (S42) submarine, of the Brazilian Navy, which is part of a unique strategic partnership between the governments of France and Brazil, resulting in the construction of the first Brazilian nuclear submarine.

The submarine is expected to be ready by 2031 and will be the largest of all, measuring 100 meters in length and weighing 7,000 tons. Macron expresses his desire to begin a chapter for new submarines, aiming to look forward to nuclear propulsion while fully respecting all non-proliferation commitments.

The French leader advocated for expanding the partnership between Brazil and France. According to him, the two countries share the same worldview and reject conflict.

Macron emphasizes that he is convinced that it is possible to establish a new strategic partnership between the two countries, which possess the same worldview and balance. He rejects a world that is a prisoner of conflict between two great powers.

Ninguém quer o rafale… O grippen mostrou superioridade aérea em combates simulados contra o rafale, o tycoon e demais participantes. A frança quer coagir em troca do submarine…
