The Ford Technology System Aims to Disable Basic Features of Vehicles, So That Defaulting Drivers Cannot Drive the Car
We don’t have many flying vehicles yet, but now we will have self-driving cars! That’s right, after the STF (Supreme Federal Court) ruled that defaulting drivers can lose their driver’s license and passport if caught driving, Ford is developing technology that allows cars to prevent their owners from driving if they have any outstanding obligations, according to Auto Esporte.
The technology patented by Ford on February 23 of this year can be installed in any vehicle with internet and data connection, as its purpose is to disable the basic functionalities of the vehicle, meaning it can disable the engine, door locks, and also the air conditioning.
Thus, with this technology, it would be enough for the owner to fail to make the vehicle payment or also lose their driving license for example, for the automaker to start controlling the vehicle’s system remotely, disabling its basic functions and preventing the driver from moving the car.

Initially, the technology would gradually disable the vehicle’s functionalities, starting with speed control and air conditioning, and then disabling the vehicle’s engine, making it so the driver cannot even unlock it.
How Does Ford Technology Work?
This technology developed by Ford would only be possible in vehicles that have internet connectivity and can update the system remotely.
In the case of self-driving cars, in the event of repossession for any reason, the vehicle would leave the driver’s home in default and head to a location that can be safely towed. Ford claims that vehicles can go to the bank’s lot or also to a Ford dealership.
If the bank no longer wants the vehicle, whether due to low value or any other reason, the technology can program the vehicle to be taken to a junkyard or auction lot, for example, removing the bank from the bureaucratic process.
In addition, Ford claims that the technology will also have an emergency mode that can be activated if the defaulting driver needs to use the vehicle to go to the hospital or if someone gets trapped inside. For this, the automaker states that the cameras and sensors in the vehicle can identify emergencies.
