The Chinese Beetle from Great Wall Motors May Arrive in Brazil Equipped with Two Electric Motors Delivering 544 Horsepower.

A year ago, the Chinese Great Wall Motors unveiled its new electric compact, the Punk Cat, at the Shanghai Auto Show in China, which is an updated version of the VW Beetle. Interestingly, the model has been affectionately nicknamed the “Chinese Beetle.” The new information now is that the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) of China revealed that the vehicle from Great Wall Motors boasts 544 horsepower, generated by two electric motors producing 245 and 299 horsepower. This version is the top-of-the-line and features all-wheel drive.

The Great Wall vehicle, in addition to the dual electric motors, also has a single motor version, but the power of the engine has not been disclosed. However, there is a significant weight difference, considering that the more powerful option weighs about 2,350 kg and the single motor version weighs 2,245 kg, which is 105 kg less.

It is worth noting that the Chinese Beetle features the characteristic fenders highlighted from the Volkswagen, metal bumpers, round headlights, and a more sloped windshield compared to the hood. The rear was inspired by the early models of the Beetle back in the 1950s. Besides being an electric vehicle, the Chinese Beetle differs from the original model due to its dimensions.

The model has a length of 4.7 meters, a height of 1.7 meters, and a width of 1.9 meters, making it 70 cm longer, 20 cm wider, and with a wheelbase 50 cm greater than the original Beetle. The vehicle’s final price has not yet been defined, but it has already been registered in Brazil. The Chinese Beetle is a great model for fans of vintage and electric cars, and updates on the model will be announced soon.

Chinese Model Will Feature a Range of 500 km

As it arrives in the Chinese market, the vehicle will come with two types of batteries. One is lithium iron phosphate, with 47.8 kWh, and the other is traditional lithium, with 59.1 kWh, which gives the car a range of 500 km.

Due to its LFP cell, the range provided by the component should be 400 km. The Great Wall Chinese Beetle will reach a top speed of 155 km/h.

Volkswagen has stated that it is studying the case of the Punk Cat to determine whether to file a lawsuit. The reason is the vehicle’s style, which may be violating rights over the iconic design of the traditional Beetle from the 1930s.
