The Federal Government Introduced a New Social Program That Promises to Expand Access to Cooking Gas. The Initiative Was Announced as a Way to Relieve the Spending of Low-Income Families, Bringing Changes Compared to the Previous Model
The President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) launches this Thursday (4) in Minas Gerais the “Gas for the People.” The social program guarantees free gas cylinders to low-income families.
It expands the current Gas Aid, which currently benefits 5.4 million households, and is expected to reach 15.5 million households. The start is expected to occur in November.
Who Will Have Access
The benefit will go to families registered in the Unified Registry, with a monthly income of up to half a minimum wage per person.

According to Minister Alexandre Silveira, the impact will be immediate on the budget. He states that the measure may represent savings of over 10% of the minimum wage for those receiving it.
“The Gas for the People is a social protection program that provides dignity and more money in the pocket of those who need it most,” he declared in an interview with the program Voice of Brazil.
How It Will Work
The government informed that beneficiaries will be able to pick up gas cylinders for free at 58,000 accredited locations across the country. All locations will have the sign “Here There Is Gas for the People.”
To ensure access, citizens can use the Bolsa Família card, the card from Caixa Econômica Federal, a voucher retrieved at lottery houses, or the Caixa app.
Additionally, there are plans to resume the distribution through “cages” at gas stations to facilitate pick-up in remote areas.
Difference in Relation to Gas Aid
Currently, Gas Aid transfers a cash amount for the purchase of the gas cylinder. In the new format, there will be vouchers or specific credits that can only be used for pickup.
The government believes that this reduces the risk of misappropriation of funds.
