The New Green Hydrogen Plant at the Pecém Complex Promises to Generate a Positive Impact on Ceará’s Economy with the Creation of Thousands of Jobs
Cactus Energia and the Pecém Complex in Ceará recently signed a pre-contract that promises to revolutionize the renewable energy industry in Brazil, with the construction of a green hydrogen plant. This partnership is focused on green hydrogen production, a clean and sustainable energy source that has the potential to change the country’s energy landscape. Furthermore, the initiative is expected to generate over 5,000 new jobs, boosting the local economy.
The Future of Clean Energy is Green Hydrogen
Green hydrogen is a revolutionary form of clean energy that is gaining prominence in the global energy landscape. It is produced through the electrolysis of water, using electricity generated from renewable sources, such as solar or wind energy. This process is highly sustainable, as it does not produce carbon emissions, making it essential in reducing carbon emissions across various industries.
The applications of green hydrogen are diverse, ranging from fueling electric vehicles to producing ammonia, a key component in fertilizer manufacturing. Additionally, green hydrogen offers a promising solution for energy storage, allowing energy generated from intermittent sources like solar and wind to be stored and used when needed. This not only aids in the decarbonization of various sectors but also contributes to building a more resilient and sustainable energy future.

The Economic Impact of Green Hydrogen Production in Ceará with the New Plant
The project led by Cactus Energia plans to construct a plant with 1.12 GW of H2V electrolysis capacity, capable of producing 190 kilotons of renewable hydrogen and over one million tons of renewable ammonia annually. This plant will be located in Sector 2 of the Ceará Export Processing Zone (ZPE) and is scheduled to begin operations in 2027.
In addition to boosting clean energy production, the plant is also a significant source of jobs. During the construction phase, approximately 5,000 highly skilled jobs are expected to be created, and over 600 jobs are expected to be maintained after construction is completed. This investment, amounting to US$ 2 billion, demonstrates Cactus Energia’s commitment to promoting renewable energies and creating economic opportunities in Ceará.
Green Hydrogen Hub: Transforming Ceará into a Sustainable Energy Hub
Ceará has been distinguished as a reference hub for green hydrogen. The Green Hydrogen Hub (H2V), conceived in 2021 by the Government of Ceará in partnership with the Pecém Complex, the Ceará Industries Federation (Fiec), and the Federal University of Ceará (UFC), has attracted various companies interested in investing in the production and export of green hydrogen.
So far, 33 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) have been signed with companies interested in producing and exporting green hydrogen from the Pecém Complex. These companies recognize Ceará’s potential as a center for clean energy production and distribution and are committed to contributing to building a more sustainable future.
