According to information from Forbes, Google confirmed that Gmail will stop using SMS codes for authentication. The change aims to enhance user security and reduce abuse. According to the company, the new method will be based on QR codes, eliminating the reliance on text messages, which are deemed vulnerable.
Google Wants to Abandon the Use of SMS for Authentication
Ross Richendrfer, spokesperson for Gmail, stated that just as the company wants to stop using passwords with the use of passkeys, it also seeks to move away from sending SMS messages for authentication. The statement was made in an email conversation with the company. This is the first confirmation that SMS codes will be abandoned.
Currently, Google uses SMS codes for two purposes: security and abuse control. Authentication ensures that the user is the same with each access. Abuse control prevents criminals from creating thousands of accounts to send spam and malware.

Reasons for the End of SMS Codes
SMS codes present security challenges. Richendrfer explained that these codes can easily be the target of phishing.
Additionally, users may not have access to the device where the code was sent. There’s also the reliance on the security practices of the carriers. “If a fraudster manages to trick a carrier and obtain someone’s phone number, the entire security value of SMS disappears,” he stated.
Another problem involves a scam known as “traffic pumping.” In this scheme, criminals make online service providers send large volumes of SMS messages to numbers they control.
For each message delivered, the fraudsters receive payment. Google has identified an increase in this type of fraud in recent years, making the replacement of SMS even more necessary.
QR Codes: The New Authentication Method
Google’s new solution will utilize QR codes. In the coming months, the company will reinvent how it verifies phone numbers. Instead of entering a number and receiving a six-digit code, a QR code will be displayed that the user will need to scan with their phone’s camera app, explained Ross Richendrfer.
QR codes offer significant advantages in terms of security. The main one is the reduced risk of phishing. Since there won’t be a numeric code to share, users cannot be tricked into providing that information to criminals. Another advantage is the elimination of reliance on the telephone carrier to protect against abuse.

According to her, SMS codes pose a high-risk source for users.
