Zelenskyy also stated that the government is willing to do everything possible to achieve a peace that is considered strong, dignified, and lasting. He emphasized that any future agreement must be accepted by the Ukrainian population.
Hundreds of thousands of people have died on both sides since the start of the invasion, regarded as the bloodiest war on European soil since World War II.
Kremlin Confirms Continuation Of Russian Military Operation
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia has not yet achieved all the objectives set for the War in Ukraine and confirmed that the military operation will continue until these goals are met.
According to Peskov, the objectives remain incomplete, justifying the continuation of military actions. Moscow maintains its position to keep fighting until it achieves its strategic outcomes.
In the previous week, Zelenskyy told AFP that Ukraine was not losing the conflict and requested that European countries consider sending troops to the front line in the event of a ceasefire.
The proposal aims to prevent further Russian attacks following a potential agreement between the parties involved in the War in Ukraine.
European Leaders Visit Kiev During Anniversary Of The Conflict
International authorities gathered in Kiev to mark the anniversary of the beginning of the War in Ukraine. Among those present were the president of Finland, Alexander Stubb, and the prime minister of Sweden, Ulf Kristersson.
The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, also participated in the official activities held in the country. She stated that Europe stands alongside Ukraine in financial and military support.
Von der Leyen declared that the goal is to guarantee the restoration of peace on terms advocated by Kiev. The agenda included participation in a commemorative ceremony and a visit to an energy facility damaged by Russian attacks.
She also participated in a videoconference with Ukraine’s allies, including representatives from Great Britain, France, and Germany.
Ukrainian Soldier Reports Losses After Four Years Of Combat
CBS News correspondent Holly Williams reunited with Ukrainian soldier Valeriy Kashkarov, whom she had known days before the Russian invasion at the start of the War in Ukraine.
Williams expressed that she believed he had died during the initial advance of Russian troops. Upon reuniting, Kashkarov remarked that he was also surprised to still be alive.
The soldier reported being shot by a Russian sniper and surviving the attack. According to him, many comrades have died during the fighting over the years.
Kashkarov expressed feeling constant pain due to the daily losses among soldiers, especially among young fighters who died on the front lines.
Territorial Dispute Remains As Main Obstacle
The United States has pushed for negotiations to end the War in Ukraine, but Russia and Ukraine continue to diverge over territorial issues.
Russia occupies about 20% of Ukrainian territory and seeks total control of the Donetsk region as part of any agreement. Moscow stated that it might take the area by force if there is no diplomatic concession.
Ukraine rejected the demand and declared it will not sign agreements without security guarantees provided by allies, including the United States, to prevent future invasions.
In recent months, Russian attacks against energy infrastructure have intensified heating and electricity outages for millions of Ukrainians during winter.
Despite significant losses, Russian troops have slowly advanced on the front lines, especially in the eastern region of Donbas, an area Moscow intends to annex.
Russia also rejected Ukrainian proposals for sending European troops after a potential ceasefire. Vladimir Putin has repeatedly stated that he may pursue his objectives by force if diplomacy fails.
Reconstruction Of Ukraine Could Cost US$ 588 Billion
The War in Ukraine has left widespread destruction in the east and south of the country, exacerbating existing economic challenges even before the conflict.
A joint report by the World Bank, the European Union, and the UN estimates that the reconstruction of the country will cost around US$ 588 billion over the next decade.
The document was published in partnership with the Ukrainian government and outlines the extent of recovery needed after four years of continuous fighting.
Kiev’s allies have imposed economic sanctions on Russia, leading Moscow to redirect oil exports to new markets, especially in Asia.
Russia justified sending troops as a defensive measure aimed at preventing Ukraine’s entry into NATO.
During the Defender of the Fatherland Day ceremony, Putin stated that Russian soldiers defend the country’s borders to ensure strategic parity among powers and secure the national future.
