Indonesian Volunteer Who Rescued The Body Of Brazilian Juliana Marins After An Accident On The Mount Rinjani Trail Has Fundraiser Canceled In Brazil After Controversy. Understand!
Agam Rinjani became a symbol of courage and empathy when he rescued — albeit the body — Brazilian Juliana. His action touched the world. However, an initiative aimed at honoring him ended in controversy: the fundraiser of over half a million was canceled due to a fee charged by the organizing platform, generating adverse reactions and resulting in the cancellation of the fundraiser.
Who Is Agam Rinjani?
Agam Rinjani is an experienced mountaineer from Makassar, Indonesia, known for his ventures in Mount Rinjani, an active and challenging volcano on the island of Lombok. He is part of the so-called “Rinjani Squadron,” a local group that assists in rescues in complicated terrains.
The Action That Transformed Him Into A Hero
On June 21, 2025, the 26-year-old Brazilian Juliana Marins fell about 300–600 meters down a steep slope during the Mount Rinjani trail. Drone videos showed she was still alive, signaling with lights and shouting for help. However, official teams took time to reach the location due to weather, fog, and unstable ground.

That’s when Agam and his team decided to act. He spent the night holding Juliana to prevent her from sliding further, installed anchors and ropes – in an operation that lasted about 14 hours – until he hoisted her body at dawn. In an interview with Fantástico, he recounted: “The worst moment was when I saw Juliana… I hoped she was still alive.” His courage and solidarity moved Brazilians and Indonesians.
The Fundraiser – From Dream To Controversy
Moved by Agam’s courage, Brazilians and the profile “Razões Para Acreditar” launched, in partnership with the Voaa platform, a fundraiser to raise funds for him and the volunteers. In just a few days, the campaign surpassed R$ 400 thousand and reached R$ 522,305.53.
But a strong complaint emerged: the platform charges 20% of the amount raised (around R$ 104 thousand) for operational costs, advertising, and staff.
Many donors were outraged: “pure opportunism,” they claimed, arguing that Agam didn’t need marketing — while the platform was exploiting the donations.
Cancellation and Refund
Faced with pressure, threats, and accusations of misinformation, Voaa and Razões Para Acreditar canceled the fundraiser on June 29, 2025 – they announced the cut via Instagram. It was stated that the entire amount would be refunded automatically on June 30, with no action required from the donors.
Why Does This Matter?
- Essential Transparency: the case exposes how decisions about who “hinders” or benefits a fundraising can create a crisis.
- Ethical Limits: the discussion is about how far a platform can deduct amounts from such an emotional campaign — charging for essential services or just “monopolizing the narrative”?
- Solidarity Under Debate: volunteers even created a petition asking for the amount to be transferred to Agam, deducting only bank fees.
And you? What do you think about this fee on fundraisers?
