Aerodynamic detail created by Toyota for the Hilux combines artisanal production in Japan, 5 mm fins, and a promise to improve highway stability, especially in crosswind situations and high-speed driving.

Toyota has started offering in Japan an aerodynamic accessory for the Hilux 125, known as Shibetsu Fin Undercover, with the promise of improving the pickup’s stability on highways, especially in crosswind situations and high-speed driving.

With a disclosed price of 75,900 yen, the component is equivalent to about R$ 2,500 in approximate direct conversion, already including taxes and installation at Japanese dealerships.

Toyota Hilux Aerodynamic Accessory

Toyota’s proposal does not involve changes to the suspension, shock absorbers, or chassis structure, but rather an aerodynamic intervention installed on the underside of the pickup.

Instead of mechanical changes, the automaker adopted an aluminum underbody panel with small stamped fins, 5 mm in height, designed to direct airflow under the vehicle and reduce oscillations perceived at the steering wheel.

The Hilux is a medium-sized pickup built on a chassis, with a high ground clearance and a body separate from the bed, a common configuration in utility vehicles aimed at cargo transport and off-road use.

This type of construction favors structural robustness and aptitude on uneven surfaces but also increases aerodynamic complexity when the vehicle travels at higher speeds.

According to information released by Toyota Upgrade Factory, the component was developed based on studies conducted at the Shibetsu proving ground in Hokkaido, Japan.

The technical proposal is to control the air passing under the pickup to reduce slow oscillations, below 1 Hz, which can interfere with the feeling of stability during driving.

In practice, according to Toyota, the accessory helps to smooth out turbulence under the vehicle and reduce pressure differences between the left and right sides of the rear.

With this change, the automaker claims that driving can become more stable in straights, curves, and crosswind situations, without requiring a more complex structural intervention.

5 mm Detail Became Central Point

The component is not presented by Toyota merely as a conventional oil pan protector, as the aerodynamic function of the fins is part of the technical proposal of the accessory.

The piece uses an aluminum sheet of 3 mm thickness, on which 5 mm fins were stamped, responsible for modifying the airflow behavior under the pickup truck.

According to the Japanese release, the so-called Shibetsu Fin reduces slow oscillations identified during driving to about one-tenth.

This result is cited by the brand as one of the factors that can improve the sense of control on the road, especially at higher speeds.

The choice of an aerodynamic solution avoids changes that could directly alter the suspension setup or modify the pickup’s behavior under different load conditions.

In models of this type, the dynamic balance varies depending on whether the bed is empty, partially loaded, or with weight closer to the intended limit for use.

Production required artisanal work

The execution of the project involved a manufacturing challenge because the fins needed to be stamped on an aluminum sheet thick enough to protect the vehicle’s underside.

According to the accessory’s release, industrial suppliers even refused to produce the piece due to the difficulty of combining precision in the creases and structural strength.

To make the component feasible, Toyota turned to the metallurgical tradition of the Tsubame-Sanjo region in Japan, known for metalworking techniques.

The process combined multi-stage presses with manual bending adjustments, maintaining the aerodynamic design and the strength required for a utility-purpose pickup truck.

Even aimed at highway stability, the accessory also maintains the function of lower protection, according to the information released by Toyota Upgrade Factory.

The piece was designed to preserve usability on rough and off-road surfaces, without turning the component into an item solely for appearance.

Which Hilux can receive the accessory

The Shibetsu Fin Undercover is compatible with Hilux 125 units produced between August 2017 and August 2022, as well as models manufactured from July 2023 to October 2024.

This application restricts the accessory to specific versions of the previous generation sold in the Japanese market, according to the data released about the component.

The price reported in Japan is 75,900 yen, with taxes and installation labor included in the package offered at local dealerships.

In approximate direct conversion, the price is around R$ 2,500, without considering potential importation, Brazilian taxes, commercial margin, or pricing policy outside Japan.

So far, there is no confirmation of the official offer of the accessory in Brazil, nor an announcement from Toyota about selling the component in Brazilian dealerships.

Without a local announcement, it is not possible to say whether the part will be offered to Hilux owners in the Brazilian market or if it will remain restricted to Japan.

Technology also appears in other Toyota models

Toyota had already applied the idea of the Shibetsu Fin in other models, such as Prius, Alphard, and Vellfire, before the accessory’s arrival to the Hilux.

The strategy indicates the use of specific aerodynamic interventions to adjust the stability of vehicles in circulation, according to the brand’s own disclosure about the development of the part.

A similar solution also appears in more robust utility vehicles, such as the Land Cruiser 250, which received an application related to controlling airflow under the floor.

In this type of vehicle, the technical proposal is to improve dynamic behavior without altering tall models with straighter lines aimed at different terrain conditions.

In the Hilux, the central point is the attempt to reduce oscillations and sensitivity to side winds through a part installed under the body.

The few-millimeter creases aim to control part of the lower airflow, an area that can influence the feeling of stability on trips, especially with the cargo bed empty.

The solution does not eliminate the inherent characteristics of a medium pickup on a chassis, nor does it replace driving care on highways, such as attention to speed, side wind, and load distribution.

Even so, the initiative shows that Toyota addressed a specific point of dynamic behavior through aerodynamics, without altering the Hilux’s suspension set.

The limited availability to Japan keeps Hilux owners in other markets without official access to the accessory at this time.

Without confirmation of sales outside the Asian country, the Shibetsu Fin Undercover remains an official solution restricted to a specific production range of the pickup.
