Hyperion Launched A New Competition For The Development Of A Revolutionary Spacecraft, Scheduled For Launch In 2025. The Initiative Promises To Redefine Space Travel, Elevating Cosmos Exploration To An Unprecedented Level.

The dream of traveling through space gains a new dimension with the Hyperion competition. Architects and engineers are invited to create a spacecraft – the ship of the future, capable of traversing centuries in the vastness of space. The company offers the creator of the starship 10 thousand dollars and professionals from various countries can participate.

What Concept Of Spaceship Does The Hyperion Competition Seek?

The concept of a starship seems simple at first glance but is extremely complex to implement. These giant structures should accommodate several hundred people for durations of up to 250 years, the time necessary to reach a potentially habitable exoplanet. The peculiarity of this starship is to maintain a self-sufficient society long after launch.

The limits of current technologies complicate the ambitions of space expeditions. Chemical engines, even optimized, are very slow. Alternatives like fusion propulsion or light laser propulsion promise speeds of up to 20% of the speed of light; however, they are far from being economically viable for a starship.

To overcome these obstacles, Hyperion proposes a new competition to create a spacecraft capable of meeting human needs for centuries. These world-ships would include simulated terrestrial habitats, artificial gravity, and advanced recycling systems for resource management. A mission that is both scientific and sociological.

In terms of physical aspects, the challenges are many. The starship must protect its passengers from cosmic radiation, micrometeoroids, and interstellar dust particles. The interior, in turn, needs to be adaptable, ensuring ideal living conditions despite material erosion and evolving needs of various generations.

When Will The Hyperion Competition Registrations Close?

Maintaining genetic diversity is another central challenge. Simulations indicate that at least 98 individuals are needed to avoid the harmful effects of inbreeding. A cryogenic bank of genetic material may be indispensable to ensure the health of future generations.

However, technology alone is not enough. The Hyperion competition emphasizes social aspects: organizing collective life, preserving cultures, and managing tensions in a confined space. Each participant must include specialists in social sciences to address these issues.

An isolated society will inevitably lose references related to Earth. To prevent the crew from forgetting their origins, values, or even their initial mission, there are educational protocols and digital archives, which will likely be essential to preserve this collective memory.

The Hyperion competition to create a spacecraft, sponsored by the Initiative for Interstellar Studies (i4is), will close its registrations on December 15.

With a prize of 10 thousand dollars at stake, this is not just an intellectual exercise, but a way to lay the first foundations for interstellar colonization. The creator of the spacecraft who is approved in the competition will be announced in June 2025: the winner will receive 5 thousand dollars, the second place will earn 3 thousand dollars, and the third will get 2 thousand dollars.

Hyperion Comments On The Competition

According to Andreas Hein, a professor at the University of Luxembourg and an associate of the Hyperion Project, the starship is developed to transport a crew, with the main objective of establishing a presence on an exoplanet or another celestial body in the target star system.

The ship is also expected to be much larger than interstellar probes, although it will likely use similar propulsion systems, such as fusion-based propulsion.

Meanwhile, anthropologist and member of the Hyperion Project, Cameron Smith, notes that the idea is to make people think about how culture can be adjusted to unusual conditions. Separation from Earth, separation from other human populations, except for communication via radio or video, which will become increasingly limited as they move away from Earth.
