Impressive catch recorded on the coast of Santa Catarina marked the end of the mullet season in 2026, consolidating one of the most expressive harvests of recent years and reinforcing the tradition of artisanal fishing in Bombinhas
An impressive scene caught the attention of residents, tourists, and lovers of artisanal fishing this Sunday, June 7, 2026, in Bombinhas, on the northern coast of Santa Catarina. According to information released by the ND Mais portal, fishermen from the traditional Quatro Ilhas beach performed a true mega haul and captured 14,096 mullets in a single operation, historically ending the species’ harvest in the municipality.
The expressive result happened precisely on the last day authorized for artisanal beach seine fishing of mullet. With the new catch, the 17 fishing ranches in Bombinhas reached the approximate mark of 58,000 fish caught throughout the 2026 season, consolidating one of the best harvests ever recorded in the city.
Mullet fishing is considered one of the most important cultural manifestations of the Santa Catarina coast. Every year, residents eagerly await the arrival of the schools, transforming beaches and communities into true meeting points to celebrate a tradition passed down from generation to generation.

Fisherman Catches 18kg Catfish Near Brazil’s Itaipu Lake, Among Largest Recorded in Recent Years
Mega haul reinforces the century-old tradition of artisanal fishing in Bombinhas
Bombinhas had already been accumulating excellent results throughout the season. Before the haul recorded this Sunday, four other large hauls had secured about 44,000 mullets for local fishermen.
The catch made at Quatro Ilhas beach drew even more attention due to the impressive volume of fish gathered in a single operation. Images shared on social media quickly gained attention, showing the collective effort of the fishermen during the retrieval of the net from the sea.
The modality known as beach seine is one of the most traditional of Santa Catarina’s artisanal fishing. In it, boats identify schools near the coast and perform the encirclement with nets, which are later manually pulled by dozens of people on the sand.
Besides the economic importance for several families in the region, the activity also has strong cultural and touristic value. During the harvest, visitors often watch the catches directly from the beaches, attracted by the possibility of witnessing historical moments like the one recorded this past weekend.
Closure of the harvest occurred after reaching the limit set for 2026
The mega catch coincided with the official announcement of the season’s closure for artisanal beach drag fishermen throughout Brazil.
According to the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture, the decision was made because the volume captured by this method had already reached 90% of the collective quota established for 2026.
The closure follows the rules of the national mullet fishing control system, created to ensure the sustainability of the species and the balance of fish stocks over the years.
Even with the end of the specific mullet season for beach drag, fishermen will be able to continue their activities normally in the capture of other species authorized by current federal regulations.
Harvest of 2026 had the largest volume released since the creation of the quota system
The mullet season officially began on May 1, 2026, and was marked by a significant increase in the capture limit.
After negotiations involving representatives of the fishermen, the Government of Santa Catarina, and the Federal Government, there was a 20% increase in the quota compared to the previous year.
In total, the 2026 harvest was authorized for the capture of 5,216 tons of mullet considering all permitted methods. This is the largest volume released since 2018, the year the quota system was adopted.
The increase was celebrated by the fishing sector, which advocated for a review of the limits given the significant presence of schools observed in recent years.
In this context, the results obtained in Bombinhas help illustrate the positive impact of the season for communities that depend directly on artisanal fishing. Besides the economic return, the harvest strengthened cultural traditions and boosted regional tourism during more than a month of intense activities.
As published by the portal ND Mais, the catch recorded on June 7 enters the city’s history as one of the most remarkable moments of the 2026 season, closing the season with impressive numbers and reaffirming Bombinhas’ prominence in artisanal mullet fishing in Santa Catarina.

Nor should they. Brazil won’t be until they have killed all the fish and destroyed all the rain forest.
Won’t be satisfied
