The idea of remotely controlling insects has existed for over two decades, but only recently have technological advances made this possibility truly functional. Cyborg cockroaches are living insects equipped with small electronic devices that allow for remote or autonomous navigation.
To transform an ordinary cockroach into a cyborg, scientists from Osaka and Diponegoro Universities developed a system that integrates sensors and microchips into the insect’s body. These circuits do not compromise their natural functions, allowing the insect to continue moving organically while receiving external commands.
Two navigation algorithms were created to optimize the performance of cyborg cockroaches. The first is simpler, suitable for controlled environments. The second allows the cockroaches to use their natural instincts to avoid obstacles and overcome challenges in more complex terrains. This adaptability is one of the factors that make these insects ideal for exploration.
