Between Endless Dunes and Crystal Clear Water Mirrors, Barreirinhas Reveals a Natural Phenomenon Recognized by UNESCO That Transforms Maranhão into One of the Most Impressive Destinations on the Planet

The white sand stretches as far as the eye can see. However, unlike a traditional desert, between one dune and another, freshwater lagoons appear and disappear according to the rainfall regime. Thus, what seems like an arid landscape actually transforms into a rare seasonal spectacle on the planet.

This phenomenon occurs in the Lençóis Maranhenses, on the coast of Maranhão. Moreover, Barreirinhas serves as the main gateway for those wishing to witness this natural transformation up close. Therefore, the city has become a reference in eco-tourism in Brazil.

Recognized by UNESCO as a Natural Heritage of Humanity in July 2024, the park gained even greater prominence on the international stage. In fact, this was the first title of its kind granted to Brazil in 23 years, reinforcing the environmental importance of the region.

Created in 1981, the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park protects 155,000 hectares of dunes, restinga, and mangroves. However, despite its desert-like appearance, the region receives about 1,600 mm of rainfall per year. Consequently, this precipitation replenishes the groundwater and forms the blue and green lagoons that have gained worldwide fame for the destination.

This information was released by “Wikipédia” and supplemented by data from ICMBio and UNESCO, highlighting both the ecological importance and the international recognition formalized in New Delhi.

How Did the Dunes That Look Like a Desert, But Hide Freshwater, Emerge?

Although many describe the Lençóis Maranhenses as a “Brazilian desert”, technically it is not a desert. On the contrary, it is the largest dune field in South America with a high rainfall index.

Furthermore, the area is located in a transition zone between Cerrado, Caatinga, and Amazon. For this reason, the biodiversity is impressive. In total, at least:

  • 133 species of plants
  • 112 species of birds
  • 42 species of reptiles

Among the threatened species are the scarlet ibis, the neotropical otter, and the manatee. Therefore, in addition to being a tourist spot, the park represents an important ecological corridor.

While the rains from January to June fill the lagoons, the following months determine their permanence. Thus, the scenery changes constantly. In this way, no visit is the same as another.

What to Do in Barreirinhas Among Dunes, Rivers, and Isolated Villages?

Barreirinhas organizes access to three main circuits of lagoons and the most sought-after river tour in Maranhão. For this, 4×4 vehicles authorized by ICMBio guide visitors along the sandy trails. Thus, access occurs in a controlled and sustainable manner.

Among the most sought-after experiences are:

Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Bonita
Both are postcards of the park. While Lagoa Azul enchants with its intense contrast between blue and white, Lagoa Bonita offers a panoramic view of the dune field. Furthermore, climbing the dune provides a feeling of an endless horizon.

Preguiças River Tour
The fast boat departs from Avenida Beira-Rio and heads to Caburé. Along the way, there are stops at Vassouras — where the Small Lençóis and marmosets are located — and Mandacaru. At this point, the Navy lighthouse, standing 35 meters tall with 160 steps, reveals the mouth of the river meeting the Atlantic Ocean.

Atins
Located just 15 minutes by boat from Caburé, the village attracts kitesurfers. Furthermore, it preserves a rustic atmosphere reminiscent of Jericoacoara decades ago.

Crossing Trekking
For the adventurers, hikes of up to five days cross the dune field. During the journey, one can stay overnight at the oases of Queimada dos Britos and Baixa Grande, where about 30 families live among the restinga.

When to Visit to Find Full Lagoons?

The climatic regime completely influences the experience. Therefore, choosing the right time makes all the difference.

January to June – Rainy Period
Temperatures between 25°C and 32°C
High rainfall
During this period, the lagoons form and reach maximum volume.

May to September – Best Time
Temperatures between 25°C and 33°C
Considered the “golden window”. This is because the lagoons are still full, while the sun appears more frequently.

October to December – Dry Period
Temperatures between 26°C and 34°C
The lagoons begin to gradually lower. Still, it is ideal for those seeking endless dunes and less tourist movement.

Data based on Climatempo.

How to Get to Barreirinhas?

Barreirinhas is 252 km from São Luís via MA-402 (Translitorânea). The journey takes about 4 hours by car or van. In addition, buses depart daily from the capital’s bus terminal.

The Barreirinhas Airport operates chartered flights and executive aviation. Moreover, the AmpliAR Program plans to resume commercial flights. The city is also part of the Rota das Emoções, connecting the Lençóis to the Delta do Parnaíba (PI) and Jericoacoara (CE).

Regional Flavors That Enhance the Experience

The cuisine arises from the meeting between river and sea. Therefore, the dishes highlight local ingredients. Among them are:

  • Fish on a Tile
  • Shrimp in Coconut Milk Sauce
  • Cuxá Rice with Vinegar, Toasted Sesame, and Dried Shrimp

Thus, the trip combines landscapes, culture, and unique flavors.

If you knew the lagoons might disappear by the next season, would you travel now or wait for the “golden window”?
