Government Opens Credit of R$ 3.3 Billion to Compensate Victims of INSS Fraud, While Minister of Social Security Claims to Discover Operations Through the Press.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) has ordered the Federal Police (PF) to go “to the last consequences” in the investigation of the INSS fraud that resulted in undue discounts and misappropriation of funds from retirees. This information was confirmed by the Minister of Social Security, Wolney Queiroz, this Thursday (18), during the program Bom Dia, Ministro, from EBC. The presidential order is for zero tolerance against the scheme, as reported by InfoMoney.
To address the immediate impact on the affected beneficiaries, the government has already issued a Provisional Measure (MP) opening an extraordinary credit of R$ 3.31 billion. According to Minister Queiroz, the main goal of this amount is to facilitate and expedite the full return of the funds that were improperly taken from INSS policyholders.
Zero Tolerance: Lula’s Order and the Minister’s Surprise
During his participation in the EBC program, Wolney Queiroz detailed the emphatic directive received directly from the president. Lula’s recommendation was explicit: there should be no limits or barriers in identifying those responsible for the INSS fraud. The Federal Police is leading the investigation, and the expectation from the Planalto Palace is that the inquiry will identify and criminally punish all those involved in the scheme that affected the benefits of thousands of policyholders.

However, one point highlighted by the minister, and reported by InfoMoney, caused surprise: the apparent lack of direct communication between the PF, which investigates the crime, and the Ministry of Social Security, which manages the benefits. Queiroz stated that he does not have privileged information regarding the progress of the investigations. The minister claimed that he has been learning about police operations and new phases of the inquiry “along with the press”, indicating a disconnect between the ministry and the criminal investigation front.
R$ 3.3 Billion for Compensation: The Plan to Pay Pensioners
In addition to the criminal investigation front, the government is taking action to mitigate the financial damage caused to retirees and pensioners. The Provisional Measure that opens the extraordinary credit of R$ 3.31 billion is currently the main tool for this compensation. This amount will be used exclusively to enable reimbursements and ensure that the return of funds misappropriated in the INSS fraud occurs as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Minister Wolney Queiroz also revealed a second direct order from Lula: massive publicity. The president determined that the ministry utilize all possible channels, including radio and television, to inform affected retirees about their right to compensation. “‘The government wants to pay’”, emphasized Queiroz, signaling an active communication effort to ensure that all those affected by undue discounts seek the INSS to recover the amounts, as highlighted by InfoMoney.
The government’s response to the INSS fraud appears to follow a dual line: rigorous investigation and accelerated compensation. However, the minister of social security’s statement about knowing about PF operations through the press is surprising and raises questions about the integration of actions.
Do you believe that the investigation by the Federal Police will be sufficient to stop this type of fraud? And what do you think about the apparent lack of direct communication between the Ministry and the police in such a serious case? Leave your opinion in the comments, we want to understand your view on the matter.
