On Thursday afternoon, 26, Lula appointed federal deputy Enio Verri from the state of Paraná to the general directorship of Brazil’s largest hydroelectric plant, Itaipu. The deputy was competing for this position against the former general director of the company, Jorge Samek (PT).
Lula decided to accelerate the appointment of Enio Verri as the general director of Itaipu, the 3rd largest hydroelectric plant in the world that recently lost its position to the Baihetan Hydroelectric Plant, shortly after a CNN report showed that military personnel aligned with Jair Bolsonaro’s (PL) party were maintaining control over the campaign, accelerating contacts, altering internal rules, and making appointments. However, Lula and Enio Verri had a meeting this afternoon, 26, in Brasília at the Palácio do Planalto, along with the president of the PT, Grasi Hoffman, to discuss the details involving the hydroelectric plant.
Enio was re-elected in October with more than 95,000 votes for his third term as deputy. He will have to resign from his seat in the Chamber of Deputies to assume the position at Itaipu. Enio’s favoritism was anticipated by CNN yesterday, 25, and the competition narrowed between Enio and Samek, following an intense behind-the-scenes struggle that involved others, including Federal Deputy Zeca Dirceu and former governor of Paraná, Roberto Requião, who are also from the PT.

According to PT members, Requião advocated for taking over the campaign in a model known as “Closed Gate,” where all lower positions would have to go through him. Deputy Zeca ended up leading the PT in the Chamber and allied with President Grasi Hoffman in support of Enio, who has been campaigning openly.

There Are Still Five Positions in Itaipu’s Board to Be Discussed
The PT member claims that Enio has a good education and is also an economist from USP, but he lacks familiarity with the area or experience in hydroelectric plants. However, the revision of Itaipu’s treaty this year will be the main challenge for the new management, as it is a process of demilitarization of the campaign. Thus, besides the established role of general director, the positions of the five departments of Itaipu still need to be discussed. The PSD, the party of Minister Alexandre Silveira, was granted five directorships at Itaipu while the PT will hold the other.
The MDB is also interested in the other position, but PT members say that the party only has one deputy in Paraná, who is linked to Bolsonarism. However, the PSD’s bench is larger than MDB’s in the Chamber, and names for positions in the company are already circulating on a list, including Silvana Vitorassi and the first lady Rosangela da Silva, known as Janja. Grasi’s preferred choice is Carlos Carboni, whose name was also mentioned.
