The story of the merchant who, for four years, created a discreet gesture at the register to help a client in need without exposing her went viral on social media and caught attention for the silent way of preserving the dignity of those who needed support to buy basic items
In a small grocery store in Pingxiang, in the Chinese province of Jiangxi, a discreet gesture transformed the routine of a vulnerable client. For over three years, merchant Chen Hui has been helping a woman who frequents his market without exposing her, preserving her dignity while ensuring she gets food and basic items.
Video recorded in 2021 gained traction on social media
Owner of Hui Xiaoge Supermarket, Chen Hui became known after posting, in 2021, a security video showing the moment when the client arrives at the register with some products and he performs only a symbolic scan, without charging for the purchase.
The case gained momentum on social media in 2025, when the recording reappeared and began receiving new messages of support.

Silent help began after signs of psychological suffering
Reports published in the Chinese press indicate that the woman began visiting the market in 2021.
Chen Hui had already noticed that she showed signs of psychological suffering and, after being informed by residents about the difficulties she faced, decided to help her silently. Instead of turning the assistance into public charity, he preferred to maintain the appearance of a regular purchase.
Small purchases became part of a silent agreement
At first, the client would still ask if she could “owe” and come back later to pay. From there, the merchant created a simple routine: he would take the scanner, point it at the products, and let her leave with the items.
Over time, the practice became a kind of silent agreement between the two. The purchases were generally small, consisting of low-cost food and beverages.
Merchant says he never wanted to turn the gesture into self-promotion
Chen Hui stated that he never wanted to exploit the situation for visibility. When explaining why he made the video public, he said his intention was to ask people to treat the woman with respect and not with mockery. At another stage, he even decided to take the recording down to avoid comments that could hurt her again.
The repercussions expanded the support network around the woman
The repercussions ended up expanding the support network around the woman. Local reports noted that residents began to show care through small gestures, such as offering food and drink, while community authorities sought contact with family members and social support for her situation.
Without grand speeches and without announcing solidarity in the cash register, Chen Hui’s attitude drew attention precisely because of the discrition.
Instead of exposing the fragility of someone in need of help, he chose to preserve the possible autonomy within that routine.
It was this combination of humanity, respect, and silence that transformed the story into a symbol of empathy for millions of people on social media.
