The Mining Industries Are Crucial in the Country’s Energy Transition
In the current global scenario, Brazil’s energy matrix has propelled the mining industry into a leadership role in the journey towards decarbonization. This leadership is the result of innovative strategies like those proposed by Aggreko, a global leader in energy solutions, which encourages the adoption of hybrid approaches to minimize costs and emissions in Brazil’s mining sector.
Aggreko and the Energy Transition
At the recent event “UK & Brazil – Partners in Energy,” held at the Museum of Tomorrow in Rio de Janeiro, Aggreko was present to discuss the opportunities and challenges in the energy transition and decarbonization process. The event, in its 10th edition, brought together professionals and experts in the sector to debate innovations, technology exchange, sustainability, and the joint development of advanced energy solutions.
The company shared insights on sustainable energy solutions for the mining industry, suggesting the application of hybrid technologies to achieve decarbonization efficiently and profitably in Brazil.

Brazil’s energy matrix is predominantly composed of renewable sources, constituting 85% of the total, compared to the global average of 27%. This scenario places the mining industries in a prominent position in the search for innovative solutions for decarbonization.
Energy Challenges in Mining
Elizangela Santana, Business Development Manager for Aggreko’s Mining Industry, highlighted at the event the relevance of hybrid plants, energy storage systems in batteries, and a conscious energy culture. Santana emphasized that the mining industry is at a crucial phase, with the opportunity to play a significant role in achieving sustainability, particularly through decarbonization and the provision of essential raw materials for the energy transition.
Participants had the chance to understand how lithium-ion batteries can be integrated with various energy sources, such as solar photovoltaic, biofuels, and wind energy, ensuring reliability, efficiency, and sustainability in energy supply.
Aggreko Towards Sustainable Innovation
Aggreko remains committed to providing sustainable and innovative energy solutions for the mining industry, supporting decarbonization and the energy transition with efficient and reliable alternatives. “We are ready to support Brazilian miners in their journey toward a more sustainable and efficient future,” emphasized Elizangela.
An example of Aggreko’s contribution in Latin America is the Salares Norte project in Chile, where a unique technology provides 24.6 MW of hybrid energy to the open-pit gold mine Salares Norte, located at over 4,500 meters above sea level. Due to its remote location, experts opted to provide 9.9 MW of solar photovoltaic energy and 14.7 MW of diesel to ensure adequate performance at high altitudes.
