MODEC Celebrates 1 Million Hours Without Incidents at Brasfels Shipyard, Advancing the Construction of FPSO Raia for the Campos Basin.
MODEC, a Japanese company specializing in floating production solutions for the oil and gas industry, has reached a significant milestone in the construction of FPSO Raia. In a ceremony held at the Brasfels Shipyard in Angra dos Reis (RJ), the company celebrated the achievement of 1 million work hours without Lost Time Incidents (LTI). This accomplishment highlights MODEC’s commitment to safety and operational excellence in the development of FPSO Raia.
FPSO Raia: Innovation in Oil and Gas Production in the Pre-Salt
FPSO Raia is scheduled to begin operations in 2028 in the Campos Basin, specifically in the Raia Manta and Raia Pintada development areas located in the pre-salt layer to the south of the basin.
Located approximately 200 kilometers off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, these areas are in water depths of about 2,900 meters. The FPSO Raia will have the capacity to process 126,000 barrels of oil per day (bopd) and 16 million cubic meters of gas, along with a storage capacity of 2 million barrels of crude oil.

The project is considered one of the main natural gas ventures in Brazil, encompassing three distinct discoveries in the pre-salt: Pão de Açúcar, Gávea, and Seat. Together, these reserves contain over 1 billion barrels of oil equivalent (boe) recoverable.
A distinguishing feature of the development of Raia Manta and Raia Pintada is the treatment of natural gas directly on the platform, allowing connection to the national grid without the need for additional processing on land.
To facilitate this integration, a 200 km export pipeline will be constructed, linking FPSO Raia to the Raia gas receiving facility in Cabiúnas, in the city of Macaé (RJ).
Brasfels Shipyard and MODEC: Strategic Partnership for FPSO Raia Project
The Brasfels Shipyard was contracted by MODEC for the construction of the topside modules for the floating production vessel. The partnership between MODEC and Brasfels Shipyard reinforces Brazil’s capability in constructing floating production and storage units.
Initially, MODEC will be responsible for the operation of FPSO Raia during the first year of activities, after which management will be transferred to Equinor.
Achieving 1 million work hours without incidents at Brasfels Shipyard is a testament to the joint dedication of the teams from MODEC and the shipyard. This milestone not only emphasizes the importance of safety in the workplace but also reinforces confidence in the success of the FPSO Raia project.
