Chinese Giant GAC Motor Announces US$ 1.3 Billion Investment in Brazil, Focused on Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Production, Promising to Transform the National Automotive Market.

In an action that promises to transform the Brazilian automotive landscape, the Chinese giant GAC Motor confirmed to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva that it will establish its factory in Catalão, Goiás, with the production of three vehicle models – including one hybrid and two electric – aimed at the national market.

The announcement, made on Monday, May 12, 2025, comes as a reflection of the tightening commercial relations between Brazil and China, at a time when foreign investments in the Brazilian automotive sector are growing.

GAC Motor, which is already a well-established name in the international automotive market, will invest around US$ 1.3 billion in Brazil, with the goal of establishing itself as a major player in the electric and hybrid vehicle industry, sectors that are expanding in the country.

According to the company’s leaders, the decision to install the factory in Goiás is directly linked to the strategic potential of the city of Catalão, as the region is becoming a hub for automobile manufacturing.

In addition to the factory, GAC has also committed to providing a fleet of electric vehicles for COP30, which will be held in Belém, Pará, next year. The Brazilian government accepted the proposal enthusiastically, reinforcing the country’s commitment to sustainability and the transition to cleaner energy sources.

The partnership was formalized during a meeting between Lula and Feng Xingya, president of GAC, in Beijing, marking Lula’s first meeting with a businessman during his visit to China.

The Arrival of GAC and Its Expansion Plans

The Chinese automaker has already shown its intention to transform Catalão into a center for producing state-of-the-art vehicles.

GAC is in negotiations to take over the HPE Automotores factory, which was deactivated at the end of 2024 and produced Mitsubishi and Suzuki models.

With this, the Chinese company plans to resume operations this year, aiming for a swift and efficient installation to start producing its models soon.

The three cars that GAC plans to launch in the Brazilian market are the Aion V, the Hyper HT, and the Emkoo.

These models were presented at a special ceremony in Beijing, in front of the St. Regis hotel, where Lula’s delegation was staying.

The Chinese automaker chose a high-visibility location to showcase its cars and, at the same time, mark the officialization of its entry into Brazil.

GAC also announced that it will launch five new models initially imported, during a ceremony that will take place in São Paulo on May 23, 2025.

The arrival of GAC Motor in Brazil occurs in a context of increasing competition among Chinese automakers.

BYD, another Chinese manufacturer, has already established itself in the country, taking over the former Ford factory in Camaçari (BA) at the end of 2023.

BYD and GWM, another Chinese vehicle brand, have been strengthening their operations in Brazil, increasing competition in the Brazilian electric and hybrid vehicle market.

Brazil-China Partnership: A Strategic Milestone

President Lula, who celebrated the announcements made by GAC, emphasized that the arrival of the automaker in the national market is the result of a strategic partnership between the governments of Brazil and China.

This collaboration has generated concrete results, such as increased investments in key sectors of the Brazilian economy, particularly in the automotive sector, which is proving increasingly promising in terms of innovation and sustainability.

According to industry experts, GAC Motor’s installation in Goiás is a significant step toward modernizing the national automotive industry.

With the advancement of hybrid and electric technologies, Brazil is becoming increasingly aligned with global mobility standards while opening doors to technological innovation and the creation of new jobs.

The construction of the factory in Goiás represents a boost not only for the local economy but also for the development of a cleaner and more sustainable automotive sector.

The Brazilian government, through its authorities and representatives, has been working to attract more investments in this field.

The Governor of Bahia, Jerônimo Rodrigues (PT), was present at the meeting with the president of GAC and took the opportunity to emphasize his administration’s efforts to promote the electric car industry in the state.

Additionally, the announcement of a possible research and development center in the Northeast was also highlighted during the negotiations.

The exact location of the center has yet to be defined, but there are speculations that it could be situated in Bahia, given the recent movement of the automotive industry in the region.

The Automotive Industry and the Transition to Electrification

Brazil has become increasingly receptive to the electrification of its national fleet, with public policies aimed at encouraging the production and commercialization of electric vehicles.

In 2024, the electric vehicle market grew significantly in the country, driven by government initiatives and increased awareness of the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

This movement is also aligned with global goals to combat climate change.

The COP30, which will be held in Belém, will be an important event for Brazil to showcase its commitment to environmental issues, and GAC Motor’s participation with its electric fleet is seen as a major symbol of this commitment.

Chinese automakers, particularly GAC and BYD, have been pioneers in implementing clean and innovative technologies in their products.

The expansion of their operations in Brazil is not only an opportunity for these companies but also a chance for Brazil to diversify its mobility options and reduce its dependence on fossil fuels.

Challenges and Prospects for the Future

Despite the high expectations regarding the arrival of GAC Motor and the positive impact the company may bring to the Brazilian economy, there are challenges to be faced.

The transition to the production of hybrid and electric vehicles requires heavy investments in infrastructure, such as the installation of charging stations and the training of specialized labor.

Moreover, intense competition with other international automakers and the consumers’ adaptation to this new reality will also be determining factors for the company’s success in Brazil.

According to analysts, GAC Motor’s strategy of starting with imported vehicles and then adapting its production locally could be a smart move, allowing the brand to gain visibility and familiarize Brazilians with its models while preparing for local production.

With the expansion of Chinese automakers, the Brazilian automotive industry is poised to undergo a true transformation.

The arrival of GAC Motor and the strengthening of companies like BYD indicate that the future of the national market is increasingly connected with innovation and sustainability.

What do you think about the arrival of Chinese automakers in Brazil? Do you believe that the production of electric vehicles can really become a success in the country?
