He described the situation as “horrible” and stated that the other driver had their high beams on.
The police were called and sent a patrol car to locate the suspect.
The driver who made the call ended up being found driving against traffic.
The encounter was recorded on video, showing the driver’s surprise upon realizing that he was the offender.
Approach And Confession Of Driving Against Traffic
When stopped, the officer asked if he knew the reason for the stop. The driver admitted right away:
“Yes, because I was on the wrong side of the road. I must have missed an exit.”
When asked if he had called the police himself, he confirmed, still not fully understanding the situation:
“Yes, because I thought someone was going the wrong way.” Upon realizing the irony of the situation, he concluded: “Yes, like an idiot”.
Consequences And Campaign Against Drunk Driving
Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident. However, tests showed that the driver’s blood alcohol content was more than double the legal limit. He was arrested for driving under the influence.
The sheriff’s office took the opportunity to reinforce a campaign against drunk driving. In a statement, it highlighted that “driving under the influence of alcohol remains one of the leading causes of injuries and deaths on the road”.
How It Works In Brazil
In Brazil, driving under the influence of alcohol is a serious violation, according to Article 165 of the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB). The penalty for this infraction includes a fine of R$ 2,934.70, resulting from the application of a multiplier factor of 10 on the base value of serious infractions.
In addition to the fine, the offending driver receives 7 points on their National Driver’s License (CNH) and has their right to drive suspended for 12 months.
In the case of re-offending within 12 months, the fine doubles to R$ 5,869.40, and the driver may have their CNH revoked.
It is important to highlight that refusing to take a breathalyzer test is also considered an infraction, subjecting the driver to the same penalties mentioned above.
Currently, there is a Bill (PL 3574/24) in progress that proposes to increase the fine to R$ 30,000 for drivers who, in addition to driving drunk, are involved in traffic accidents. However, this bill has not yet been approved and, therefore, is not in effect.
