Drivers Over 70 Will Have Driver’s License Blocked Without Regular Medical Exams; Renewal Required Every 3 Years.
The Driver’s License now has stricter rules for elderly drivers. According to the FDR portal, drivers aged 70 and older can only keep their license active if they undergo regular medical exams; otherwise, the Driver’s License may be automatically blocked. The measure aims to enhance safety on the roads, but it also raises debates about how much age should determine restrictions.
In practice, the new renewal model considers not only age but also the physical and cognitive condition of the driver.
The legislation establishes a maximum period of three years for the renewal of the Driver’s License for drivers aged 70 and older, which may be shorter depending on the candidate’s health.

What Changes for Those Aged 70 and Older
With the new rule, elderly drivers must present updated exams periodically to prove they are capable of driving safely.
The objective is to reduce risks related to impaired vision, longer reaction times, or cognitive limitations that may affect quick decision-making in traffic.
Among the checked points are:
- Vision: identification of eye diseases and reduced visual acuity.
- Reflexes: response time in risky situations.
- Cognitive Ability: discernment and judgment for making decisions.
Frequency of Exams and Driver’s License Renewal
According to FDR, the Driver’s License renewal for drivers aged 70 and older must occur, as a rule, every three years, upon completion of medical exams.
In situations where the medical report indicates specific conditions, the period may be shorter, requiring additional evaluations and presentation of supplementary certificates.
This means that the renewal of the Driver’s License is no longer automatic at the same pace as younger drivers, and each case will depend on the medical assessment regarding the ability to drive.
Consequences of Driver’s License Blocking
If the driver fails to meet the renewal deadlines or is deemed unfit in the tests, the Driver’s License may be suspended or automatically blocked, preventing driving until regularization.
This situation can directly impact elderly individuals who still rely on their cars as their primary means of transportation.
According to experts, the blocking is not permanent: the document can be reactivated upon presentation of medical exams proving the ability to drive.
How to Avoid Issues with the Driver’s License
To keep the document active without surprises, drivers aged 70 and older should:
- Regularly undergo medical exams, respecting the deadlines set by the DMV.
- Monitor official notifications sent via email or mail.
- Keep medical reports updated, especially in cases of chronic diseases.
The new rules for renewing the Driver’s License for drivers aged 70 and older represent an effort to balance road safety and the right to mobility.
With mandatory exams every three years — or at shorter intervals depending on health — the measure aims to reduce accidents but also generates discussion about possible excessive restrictions for elderly individuals who still drive with full capacity.
What do you think about the requirement for more frequent exams to renew the Driver’s License after the age of 70, is it fair or excessive?
