"By joining the RE100 initiative, Nokia intends to show leadership in the adoption of renewable energy and use its position in the ICT value chain to encourage suppliers and customers to take similar steps to reduce emissions, accelerating the shift to sustainable electricity," said the company. According to the supplier, the announcement consolidates the goal that Nokia already had to reduce polluting gas emissions in its operations, and to have a 100% consumption of renewable energy by the year 2025.

Nokia has been reporting a rise in renewable electricity use at its company for a few years now. This is because the level across the company, in 2020, totaled 39%, while preliminary figures for 2021 show 45% of energy consumed as renewable.
Along with this action, Nokia also has the objective of reducing emissions by 50% throughout the value chain, making them pass through its own operations, through products in use, logistics and supplier and assembly plants by the year 2030.
The RE100 project is led by the Climate Group, together with the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and, now, the Finnish company Nokia as a new member. Carbon Disclosure has been in partnership with Nokia for over ten years and is the company responsible for the system that monitors the company's emissions volume.
The use of renewable and more financially efficient energies is one of the biggest trends in the telecom chain, which seeks to harmonize the increase in energy consumption generated by the arrival of 5G networks and the implementation of ESG agendas between suppliers and operators.
About the RE100 project
RE100 is the global corporate renewable energy initiative that brings together hundreds of large, ambitious companies committed to 100% renewable electricity. Led by the Climate Group and in partnership with CDP, its mission is to accelerate the shift to zero-carbon grids at scale.
RE100 project members have global operations and span sectors from manufacturing and pharmaceuticals to fashion and technology. Together they send a powerful signal to markets and governments about the demand for renewable electricity.
RE100 member companies are already generating enough renewable electricity demand to supply a medium-sized country.
