Norte Energia Leads in the Free Market, with 6% of National Energy, 3.1 Million I-RECs, and Operations in the Electric Grid and Amazon Biome.
Norte Energia establishes itself as a prominent player in the Brazilian Free Energy Market. With a significant contribution to the national electric grid, the company not only maintains a strong presence in the sector but also advances its sustainability practices. Norte Energia is responsible for generating a considerable portion of renewable energy, demonstrating a commitment to preserving the Amazon biome and sustainability in its operations.
As an important company in the Brazilian market, Norte Energia aims to provide solutions that not only meet energy demands but also promote the responsible use of natural resources. The company has issued millions of I-RECs, illustrating its essential role in ensuring access to clean and renewable energy. With its environmental commitment and continuous innovation, the company remains at the forefront of the sector.
In the current business model, Norte Energia, the concessionaire responsible for the Belo Monte Hydroelectric Plant, engages in the commercialization of a significant portion of the energy generated by the largest 100% national hydroelectric plant. This energy is primarily directed to agents in the Free Energy Market, significantly contributing to the security and balance of the national energy system. With a physical guarantee of 4,751 MW, about 20% of this production is specifically allocated for this purpose. This strategy not only strengthens Norte Energia’s position in the market but also ensures a crucial role in the national electric grid.

Illiterate or semi-literate grandmothers were trained to repair solar systems, open rural workshops, and light up homes that still depended on kerosene.

The world has bet on green hydrogen as the fuel of the future, but now faces the side effect: producing 1 kilogram requires about 9 liters of ultrapure water, and the largest projects on the planet are precisely in the driest regions of the Earth, where water is already scarce for people.
I-RECs and Sustainability
In addition to energy generation, Norte Energia also stands out in an important market segment, the renewable energy certification. The company is actively involved in the commercialization of I-RECs, certifying the clean energy generated by its infrastructure. This move reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainable solutions and the transition to a low-carbon economy. Since its certification in 2021, 3.1 million certificates have already been sold. These I-RECs attest to the renewable origin of the energy that Belo Monte provides, supporting both national and international companies in their initiatives to neutralize greenhouse gas emissions.
Growth in the Certificates Sector
In 2024, the company reached a significant milestone by selling 1 million I-RECs to national consumers. This achievement demonstrates Norte Energia’s efficiency in meeting the growing demand for a cleaner and more sustainable electric grid. In fact, Norte Energia leverages its management and autonomy capabilities to position itself as a leader in this sector. The Belo Monte hydroelectric plant, in turn, with its capacity to serve over 60 million people, is a key element in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions in the Amazon biome.
Belo Monte: Natural Battery of the SIN
The plant plays a fundamental role in energy supply, meeting about 10% of national demand. It functions as a kind of natural battery for the National Interconnected System (SIN), ideal for times of high energy demand and consumption peaks. Thus, it helps avoid the need to use more expensive and polluting energy sources. In 2024, the plant achieved remarkable milestones, generating approximately 6% of all energy consumed in Brazil during the first half of the year. This production was sufficient to supply around 20 million households, highlighting its strategic importance not only for the national electric grid but also for supporting the country’s economic growth.
With this impressive performance, Norte Energia solidifies its position as one of the largest renewable energy generators in Brazil. This recognition is supported by its efficient management and autonomy, proven by its ability to meet the significant energy demands necessary for the growing economy of the country.
