Humans have always been fascinated by the stars in various ways. However, there seems to be a particularly strong current interest in the astrophysics of the Cosmos beyond our solar system. This is partly due to space agencies conducting several new scientific studies around the world, so there is a need to create new propulsion technologies that allow for significantly faster speeds. One of these technologies is the nuclear engine, which is being developed by Elon Musk at his company SpaceX.

If we want to send autonomous probes to the nearest stars over a human lifetime, one of the most promising solutions is the nuclear engine, but commercially viable results have not yet been demonstrated.

Meet Elon Musk’s Starship That Will Receive the New Nuclear Engine

The biggest obstacle to interstellar travel is the absence of appropriate technology. The fact that stars are so far away is the fundamental issue for creating something much faster to get there. For example, Proxima Centauri, the closest star to us, is 4.3 light years away, which is equivalent to 269,000 astronomical units, where A is the average distance between Earth and our sun, approximately 150,000 km.

Now it seems that the era of space travel powered by a nuclear engine is finally arriving. SpaceX, Elon Musk’s company, is working on the Starship, a massive rocket made of stainless steel that would be the most powerful rocket ever built.

It stands approximately 120 meters tall when combined with its booster stage, surpassing the Statue of Liberty on its pedestal. It would also be fully reusable unlike any previous orbital rocket. Elon Musk’s private spaceflight venture, Interprise SpaceX, was founded with the goal of making life possible on other planets in the event of a catastrophic occurrence.

What Are the Main Advantages of SpaceX’s New Nuclear Engine

Elon Musk claims that humans can be relocated to other planets like Mars to maintain civilization. To make this vision a reality, a vehicle capable of handling the journey is necessary, and this is the gateway to Elon Musk’s powerful starship, which will be developed to be instantly and completely reusable, indicating that the main hardware components are returned to the ground for reuse instead of being burned or dumped in the ocean, as is the case with some other launch systems.

After returning from space, SpaceX’s Starship can be quickly refueled with propellant and ready for launch again like an airplane, and as a result, the cost of the entire operation is reduced. Elon Musk’s company has been using the Falcon 9 since 2010 and has become one of the most important launch vehicles for international space flights. The next generation is the Starship.

How Does a Nuclear Engine Work?

Although the nuclear engine has existed for some time, it has the potential to reduce travel times and carry more payload than today’s best chemical rockets, which are currently the most powerful. NASA received new research funding in 2018 and 2019 to resume thermal propulsion research with the aim of a planned test flight for 2024. 

In a nuclear engine, fusion occurs when uranium atoms split within the core, producing heat. The propellant is heated during this physical process, transforming into gas that expands through a nozzle to create thrust. Nuclear rockets are twice as efficient as chemical rockets and denser in energy than conventional ones.

This is because lighter gases are more easily accelerated than heavier gases. Unlike thermal propulsion systems that use hydrogen, chemical rockets emit water vapor as a byproduct which is much heavier. As a result, thermal propulsion rockets can go farther with less fuel, resulting in greater efficiency.

What Are the Main Projects Elon Musk Is Currently Working On?

Elon Musk, one of the most visionary entrepreneurs of our time, has stood out for his investments in three main areas that not only shape the future of technology but also have the potential to significantly alter life on Earth and beyond. Firstly, SpaceX, founded by Musk in 2002, is at the forefront of space exploration.

Aiming to reduce space travel costs and enable Mars colonization, SpaceX has revolutionized the industry with the development of the Falcon Heavy, the most powerful operational rocket in the world, and the Starship, designed for interplanetary missions. Additionally, the Starlink initiative aims to provide high-speed internet globally using a constellation of satellites in low Earth orbit.

Musk’s second major investment is Tesla, Inc., which he helped to found in 2003. Tesla has become synonymous with innovation in the automotive sector, leading the transition to electric vehicles with models that combine performance, design, and advanced technology like Autopilot. The company has not only challenged the traditional automotive industry but also propelled the global adoption of electric vehicles, contributing significantly to reducing dependence on fossil fuels and the fight against climate change.

Lastly, Neuralink, founded by Musk in 2016, explores the frontiers of neurotechnology with the goal of developing high-bandwidth brain interfaces. This investment has the potential to revolutionize the treatment of neurological diseases and brain disorders, as well as open new paths for interaction between humans and machines, representing a significant step toward merging human intelligence with artificial intelligence.

Together, these three investments reflect Musk’s vision of a future where humanity not only overcomes its most pressing challenges on Earth but also expands beyond it, exploring and inhabiting new worlds. His work at SpaceX, Tesla, and Neuralink not only demonstrates a commitment to innovation and technological progress but also a bold bet on human potential and our collective destiny.
