In an initiative that promises to transform Brazilian road infrastructure, BNDES approved financing of R$ 7.3 billion for EcoRioMinas. The project includes the duplication of 303 km of roads between Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais and the implementation of the innovative freeflow electronic toll system, revolutionizing mobility and safety on highways.

The highways connecting Rio de Janeiro to Minas Gerais are about to undergo significant transformation.

With robust investment and the adoption of advanced technologies, these roads are expected to become safer and more efficient, benefiting thousands of drivers daily.

BNDES Approves Financing of R$ 7.3 Billion for EcoRioMinas

The National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) approved financing of R$ 7.3 billion for EcoRioMinas Concessionária de Rodovias S.A.

This amount will be used for the modernization of sections of BR-116, BR-465, and BR-493 highways, covering 727 kilometers between Rio de Janeiro and Governador Valadares, in Minas Gerais.

The initiative will directly benefit 36 municipalities in both states.

Duplication and Expansion of Roads for Greater Flow

The project plans to duplicate 303.2 km of roads and construct 255 km of additional lanes in strategic areas.

These interventions aim to increase the capacity of the roads to accommodate the growing volume of traffic, especially in regions with high population density and intense economic activity.

Additionally, 85 km of marginal roads will be implemented to reduce congestion at critical points, such as in Serra Rio-Teresópolis.

Implementation of the Freeflow Electronic Toll System

One of the most anticipated innovations is the introduction of the electronic toll system known as freeflow.

This system will allow automated toll collection without the need for stops at toll plazas, ensuring greater traffic flow and reducing the emission of polluting gases.

The measure will also promote fairer charging, where drivers will pay proportionally to the distance traveled.

Job Creation and Regional Development

The works are projected to generate over 24,000 direct and indirect jobs, boosting the economic development of the regions involved.

This project is part of the federal government’s New Growth Acceleration Program (PAC), which aims to modernize national infrastructure and promote economic growth.

Partnership Between Public and Private Sectors to Enable Investments

The financing structured by BNDES involved the collaboration of private institutions, such as BTG Pactual and Bradesco.

Of the total approved, R$ 663.4 million corresponds to a direct credit line, while R$ 6.6 billion will be raised through the issuance of debentures.

In the first issuance, held on February 20, 2025, R$ 1.35 billion was raised, half of which was purchased by market investors.

Improvements in Safety and Infrastructure for Users

In addition to capacity expansions, the project includes various improvements to enhance user safety.

462 bus stops and 75 pedestrian overpasses will be installed along the route, facilitating pedestrian movement and reducing the risk of accidents.

Bicycle lanes will also be constructed to encourage more sustainable modes of transport.

Environmental Preservation and Sustainability

Environmental concerns have also been considered in the planning of the works.

Wildlife crossings will be constructed to allow safe crossings for wildlife and sound barriers to minimize noise impact in residential areas close to the highways.

These measures aim to reduce ecological impacts and promote a harmonious coexistence between road infrastructure and the environment.

Strategic Importance of Highways for the Country

The highways covered by the project play a crucial role in national logistics.

They connect the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro to important producing regions in Minas Gerais and serve as a main route for the flow of agricultural and industrial products.

The modernization of these roads is essential to optimize the transportation of goods and strengthen the regional and national economy.

Expectations for the Future of Road Infrastructure

With the completion of the planned works by 2030, it is expected that the highways will provide better traffic conditions, greater security, and efficiency in the transportation of goods and passengers.

The adoption of modern technologies, such as the freeflow electronic toll, positions Brazil at the forefront of innovation in road infrastructure, aligning with international best practices.

For experts, the significant investment in the modernization of the highways between Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais represents a milestone in the development of Brazilian infrastructure.

The combination of capacity expansion, adoption of advanced technologies, and sustainability measures promises to transform the user experience and boost economic growth in the served regions.

This project highlights the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors to achieve substantial improvements in essential services for the population.
